S is looking for housing near San Jose State Univ for a possible summer internship this year. Would likely be for two months - June and July and perhaps the first week or two in August as well. Would appreciate any leads - subletting perhaps? He wont have a car - so will need to be walking distance or if available, public transport.
He should get a bike for transportation. That will allow him to live somewhat farther away, not that anywhere is going to be cheap. Bikes are allowed on light rail, commuter rail and buses in the San Jose area.
Look into AirBNB, you may find it less expensive. The neighborhood s you want to look at are Naglee Park and the Rose garden areas of San Jose. As for a bike, you can rent them using your cell phone.
This isn’t San Jose specific, so it may or may not be useful. But we just went through this for my daughter’s internship housing in Austin, and here’s what we ran into.
We started looking on Craigslist. There were a number of possibilities in the “Sublets” section. It is possible to show the listings on a map, so that can help you narrow down the likely matches. The leasing office at one of the student complexes let me know that there is far more sublet advertising on Facebook than on Craigslist. Look for a group like “San Jose State Sublet” or similar.
We used Google Maps directions, using public transit and likely travel times, to figure out which locations would have the easiest commutes.
Some of the leasing complexes keep a list of residents who would like to find a sublettor. Most don’t; they require the sublettor and sublettee to find each other, and then contact the leasing office.
Most of the leases start August 1, so it was easy find sublease situations through July 31. But not into August.
We were very surprised at the fees for application, administration, and reletting… a total of $750. That’s a lot of extra cost for a few months!
@Mommertons - that’s interesting that it cost close to 750$ for subletting! Thanks for letting us know. I did find a facebook page with several offers for subletting. The most promising one so far. Things are on hold right now - he should know later this week if the offer is final for San Jose. The other option that they are looking into is assigning him to the Boston office which would mean he could stay at home! Definitely the preferred option, especially cost-wise.
Looks like some SJSU dorms are available in the summer:

@ucbalumnus - he was looking at those dorms. Fortunately, now he doesn’t have to - got confirmation yesterday that his internship will be at the boston office!
