I applied for a couple of programs, but ultimately not did get them or could not afford them. I know it is very late, but I live in NYC and was wondering if anyone has any ideas or suggestions on what to do summer?

Take a free online STEM class:
MIT EDX or Open Course Ware
Coursera
Khan Academy
and many more
Read books.
Ask around about finding a professional to shadow.
Ask around about an unpaid internship.
Volunteer( hospitals and animal shelters might take late applicants).
Get 500$ and go to the goodwill outlet and flip things on eBay for guaranteed profit of 2000$ over a 2 month period
worked for me anyway other than that I guess do some internships or whatnot
