Hi All, Any reviews of the Molecular Engineering summer immersion program at U Chicago? How good is the content for a rising senior student? Was there an ample opportunity to learn / research topics?
My daughter participated in the molecular biology program last summer as a rising junior. She had a great experience in a variety of ways, including but not limited to the coursework. She said several other programs were a bit more intense than hers, but was pleased with the balance.
As for context of benefit of the program, she is taking AP Bio through John’s Hopkins CTY program as her HS does not offer AP Bio. She just finished the course and received a 100% on all but one lab report (one was a 98). She attributed much of that to the background work at the uchicago program as they did many labs and had to do a reports on each one and got proficient at completing them. There was also a final independent (paired with another) research project that they had to present.
She enjoyed the program enough to apply to the RIBS program for this summer and was accepted. She turned it down today because she was accepted to join a Bio lab at a local university this summer. A non insignificant reason for getting that internship was what she learned at uchicago last summer. Building blocks.
Also, she met some great kids from around the world and grew a lot from those interactions. Her roommate was from China, and other friends were from Turkey, Europe, and across the US.
She would be an advocate of the program.
Also, I believe molecular engineering is a new program at uchicago, so I imagine that the immersion program will be incredibly interesting to help highlight it.
Thanks so much for this detailed reply! This is very useful indeed.
