Summer in the City--Housing Question

My 16yo d will be attending a program in NYC that requires us to arrange housing. We’ve been sent a list of about 30 or so alternatives. I was wondering if others of you have encountered this, and if you’ve found places you’d recommend or would warn us to avoid. Many housing options do not accept an unchaperoned 16yo.

Jasmom,
Don’t know if this would help but I just read this article and thought of your question. I have no idea if this tiny hotel is close to the program location, but fom the picture it does look kind of like a small dorm room.

Love it! May not work for her, but it’d be great to use when I visit. Thanks!

I know many kids that have attended dance programs in NYC. What many of them did was find a few other girls to share housing for the 6-8 weeks, and sublet an apartment. The mom’s would each stay a week with the girls so they were never unchaperoned. I believe one group found a place on their own, not from the list the school provided. They did find the roomates from the school list though.

It was my understanding that you need to look early for a sublet as the more reasonably priced units go quick.

NYU rents out dorm rooms during the summer at reasonable rates. A lot of college students from other colleges rent rooms there - I don’t know if there is a minimum age requirement. They close out very early, so you canot wait too long if you are interested. I believe that you can pick the weeks that you want and they can be cancelled. My D tried to stay there a few years ago when she was doing internships in Manhattan but applied too late and could not get in.

There is a minimum age requirement - 17. Hope this gives you the info you need.
