My son has been offered a great internship in Ventura County, California. It is outstanding experience with a prestigious program, but it doesn’t pay very well. Barely over minimum wage, which wouldn’t even be enough to pay the rent alone on most of the sublets we have seen in the area. We don’t know a soul there. Any ideas? Most of the tips I have seen have been about UCLA/USC housing or frat houses, but this internship is north of the city, the Simi Valley area, and it would not make sense for him to fight his way through downtown traffic to get there. There is really only one college nearby, CSU Northridge, and the sublets listed there are just as expensive as downtown LA.
You might look for a California Lutheran University sublet. They’re in Thousand Oaks, Ventura County.
We had good luck with Westside rentals last year - found a nice apartment for S through them…there is a fee for full access, but it’s well worth it.
Thanks, he contacted their housing office to see if they lease dorms over the summer. Not sure how to search for sublets there, other than craigslist which has turned up nothing.
Thanks, I will contact westside, his budget is so tight though because this company seems to think the experience is worth more than a living wage…
There is also Cal State Channel Islands in Camarillo. ( it’s not on a island) I don’t know if they have dorms. Camarillo would be doable if he has a car. What about checking AIrBnB and seeing if he can arrange a longer term rental.
Westside also lists roommate situations - renting a room in a house or apt. may be his least expensive option.
