Summer Internship Housing in LA

My son has 2 summer internships in LA this summer starting the end of May 2013 - one in Santa Monica and the other in Beverly Hills. Housing and transportation are principal concerns.

Any advice on affordable housing options would be welcome - fraternity, house sitting, etc.

Does anyone have some advice or knowledge to share?

UCLA is “somewhat” (for Los Angeles) in between the two; it’s in Westwood. Does he have a fraternity affiliation? If using Craigslist, look under “WST” (west side) - I did a quick search under “sublets/temporary” for UCLA and saw several openings.

I worked for an apartment rental company headquartered in Santa Monica. In general, rent is fairly outrageous in those areas, but as Fred mentioned, UCLA is in between the two areas (although closer to Beverly Hills), and a great deal of students need to sublet over the summer. Craigslist isn’t the best resource for UCLA, as many students post on the UCLA housing page [url=<a href=“http://map.ais.ucla.edu/portal/site/UCLA/menuitem.3f8e7342ad4ca217b66d4ab4f848344a/?vgnextoid=6a287e9231434010VgnVCM100000db6643a4RCRD]UCLA”>http://map.ais.ucla.edu/portal/site/UCLA/menuitem.3f8e7342ad4ca217b66d4ab4f848344a/?vgnextoid=6a287e9231434010VgnVCM100000db6643a4RCRD]UCLA - Community Housing/url. Your son may also want to try joining the UCLA facebook group, where many desperate students post their subletting offers.

One more thing, UCLA is on a quarter system, so classes get out much later than either Emory or U Michigan (I assume that’s where your children go). I believe Santa Monica Community College is on a semester system. That CC attracts a number of out of area students who might be looking for someone to sublet during the summer. I frequently dealt with many SMCC students who needed a place to live during the school year. Presumably some of those students go home after spring semester.
