Summer internship housing in MiT

My S got an internship at mit, but we are having trouble finding housing. He will be going alone. MiT and its independent living groups dont take minors, and we’re thinking some people would be hesitant to rent out to a minor.

Any suggestions?
Thanks

Try various fraternities. In the past they have been a source for summer internship housing. http://ifc.mit.edu/summer.php</a>
I’m not sure if this is up-to-date for this summer, but is certainly a starting point.

do they take minors? i emailed a few and they were either full / didn’t take minors.

How old is your son? For two years in a row my D had luck renting a room from an MIT fraternity when she had summer internships in Cambridge.

he is 16.
which fraternities, if you remember?
and is it too late to get a room at a frat?

Hmmm… D was 18. I do not remember which frats (and D is across the globe, but I can still try to ask), but I do recall that she had to reserve her room early, some time in early April.

Here is a good list of Boston area housing resources (there are many other schools near MIT that rent rooms):

And a list of Boston neighborhoods:

does anyone know whether minors can rent out apartments / sublets? would craigslist be a viable option?

You mean YOU got an internship - according to your other posts.

Start off being honest.

How about the real story of if you got an internship and why your parents or the university are not helping a minor secure housing. You are truly going to be interning at 16 on your own???

my S and i share this account.
i’m helping him look for housing, which is why i am here in the first place. Please be considerate of what others are trying to do accomplish.
&yes, he is.

The dept/program that gave him/you the internship at age 16 has no guidance for housing??? How long is the “internship”??? Are there others in the program who are minors and would be looking for housing??

its not a program, he directly contacted the professor.
&mit dorms are for students only.

thinkerer, it is really easy to set up your own account (and a proper thing to do)! Or are you trying to avoid CC addiction? I would start with the MIT office that handles internships or the future “boss” (if your son knows to whom he is going to report).

cross-posted with abasket.

@bunsenburner i will probably do that sometime in the near future, thanks
they suggested homestays and fraternities, either of which do not allow minors. Do you think subletting would be appropriate?

My d goes to MIT and always stays during the summer in one of the dorms. I can’t imagine going through Craig’s list to find housing for a 16 year old – both from a legal and safety point of view. If you haven’t already done so, definitely reach out to the person who offered this internship. If there’s no advice there, perhaps one of the B&Bs would work out a long term arrangement – sounds expensive but I can’t imagine there are many options for a minor.

I am not judging you in any way but if you are a parent, for your own peace of mind, you should be on the phone with various departments at MIT to resolve this situation - the dept that is “hiring” him, the student housing department, career services - something/somebody who would provide insight into housing. Do you know any families in the area who could provide a room for your son? How far is MIT from where you live - have you or your son visited there to know what/where you should be looking??

And other CC parents, does this really happen - a 16 year old gets an internship at MIT? A summer camp I could imagine, but I would also think that MIT students themselves are clamoring for any professor assisted internships.

I have never heard of such a thing at MIT. Internships definitely eagerly sought after by MIT students themselves. The closest thing I have heard of is when there are day programs offered by national labs to high school students. Sometimes parents who live too far to commute are looking to get their kids into these kinds of programs which are geared only towards commuting students. There are no overnight accommodations made because it is expected that the participating student will return home each day.
