Summer Internship in the ER

I will be a Junior in High School for the 2013/14 school year, and I have managed to secure and internship in the ER at St. John’s Hospital in Yonkers for this summer. My question to you all is whether or not this will truly be a clincher on an application should I not change my mind and decide to try my luck as a pre-med student (provided I get accepted that is).

While I don’t currently have an in depth description of my scholastic achievements, as I am still not far into my high school career, allow me to list a few.

-2 sport Varsity athlete (Soccer our school recently won a state championship in the highest division and we are ranked 5th nationally- fall and Track- spring and winter)
-Top 4% of the school with about a 4.0 GPA unweighted (they don’t release grades very often)
-1900 on the PSAT this year as a Sophomore without any studying prior (I’m predicted to get about a 2100-2200 after studying on the actual SAT, but I know that is just useless speculation)
-Most rigorous course load available

My dream school is Duke, and while I know that is a stretch for even the most accomplished of students, especially those attempting pre-med, I was just wondering if this internship would be able to give me just a little bit of an edge over other applicants should all those listed achievements hold true, as I am sure not many people get this kind of an opportunity before college. Thanks!

clincher? opportunity not many other students have?

This doesn’t sound like that. It sounds like a great opportunity and one that you could get a lot out of (what exactly will you be doing?) But honestly being on a top 5 soccer team sounds way more impressive than this hospital position.

I also assume you’re only asking about getting into college because this won’t even make your application to medical school (unless you keep going back to this ER repeatedly during college).

Just wondering, how did you manage to get the internship at the hospital? Thanks!

What can a HS junior possibly do in a hospital ER without so much as a Red Cross certificate?

D was volunteering in Hospitals in HS, mostly clerical, some times she taught hand crafts to patients. Its not clinical and did not help her anyway in Med school apps this cycle.

Hospitals do accept volunteering, but that is like volunteering in any other businesses.

On thing good from volunteering in a hospital is that you learn first hand about pain and suffering, life and death. early in your life. It is a basis for further interest in become a doctor.
