I’m working as a cashier at a grocery store in which I have been employed since I was in high school while I am home from college this summer. What actually surprises me is that I actually like being at work compared to being at home. When I came back home after the semester ended, I just stayed home for a week before going back to work, and I hated it. When I went back to work, I actually enjoyed it, and I continue to enjoy it. I guess it keeps me productive, just like how college kept me productive all year? I didn’t think I’d enjoy working all summer, but I actually do.
It is a good thing that you prefer to be busy and earning money.
Not weird at all. That attitude will serve you well your entire life.
Nah, I get antsy when I don’t have enough to do as well.
Like everyone else has said so far, No it’s not weird. I’m teaching piano to little kids and it’s great. I feel like I’m earning money without even actually working.
You are learning why people often actually prefer to have a job versus not. Work is a way to get a certain level of stimulation and social interaction as well. Also makes any vacation or break all the more sweeter.
This is great. It means when you get out of school you’ll be much more prepared than a lot of your peers to transition into the real world.
You are in a fortunate position since you are more likely to get financial aid if you contribute to your own income and hold a job. So I have to say this isn’t a bad thing at all.
I am the same way. My home life can be very stressful (not any abuse or anything, just family drama) so I was so happy when I found my job and now I also have a summer course, so I am keeping busy. Plus, i feel so lazy when I’m just twiddling my thumbs. It makes lazy afternoons just that better because I feel I “earned” them.
I was in my late 40s before I found that I preferred time off for long stretches vs being at work. Before that I would get pretty bored after a week or two at home. So no, it isn’t abnormal.
You’re not wrong at all. I wish I had a summer job right now, in fact I was literally rejected from a cashier job I applied to last week. And it’s annoying as hell…
That’s wonderful that you are enjoying your job. I think we feel happier and more productive when we have a daily routine. Make sure to take at least a week off before going back to school in the fall. You want to go back feeling refreshed.
I feel exactly the same way; it’s not weird to like working at all. As many have said, it’s really nice to be able to keep busy and have something to focus on.
Cashier in a grocery store was one of my favorite jobs.
I haven’t seen the usual distain that some posters bring to the topic of retail or food service jobs this year. I still remember the poster who refused to get an ice cream shop job because supposedly only potheads worked in ice cream shops.
LOL @CheddarcheeseMN, when you need money any job is good enough!
I loved working in an ice cream shop and did it for several summers. I also enjoyed being a cashier. I didn’t love waitressing, but I got good at it and sure enjoyed couting out my tips at the end of the night. I had to do these types of jobs to survive and get through college. All of these types of jobs did teach me that I didn’t want to have to do those types of jobs for life and solidified that I wanted to become a professional of some kind. So they were helpful for that reason too.
It’s great imho.
I have a little job outside the house myself this summer (LOL as a mom) and I’m surprised how much I like it.
There’s a saying: People need 3 things to be happy . . . something to do, something to love, and something to hope for. I tend to agree.
Thanks for the comments, everyone.
Don’t get me wrong: customer service can be a pain sometimes, but I like the fact that the job keeps me busy over the long summer break. I think it really helps lessen my wanting to go back to school. I still miss school and my friends very much, but getting out of the house a few days a week and staying busy really helps lessen that yearning to go back. When I was at home for a week with nothing to do, all I could think about was how much I wanted to be back at school. Now, it’s not as bad because I have things to do.
@LBad96
I’m in not much better of a position. I mean I’m a gallery attendant and start June 23 and I have 3 days until the end of the month. Problem? I’m only scheduled for one day in July (the 29th), unless something happens to the other two attendants. Granted I could have busy August and I’ll probably do Labor Day Weekend but still. On the subject of being a cashier, my local Stop and Shop doesn’t want summer employees so I was essentially rejected as well. How is it in the social department for you?

For me, the situation is kind of different because it distracts me from the fact that I no friends at school or back in my hometown.
