<p>I’m a sophomore econ major at UPenn and I’m trying to figure out what to do this summer for employment. I have very little work experience so I probably won’t be competitive for many internships. I’m going to try to find something through my school’s OCR, but I don’t feel very optimistic. Career services told me that most of the companies are mainly looking for rising seniors, not rising juniors. However, my dad offered me a little internship at his company in New York City over the summer. I’m afraid that this won’t seem credible though because my dad got the job for me. Does that matter or is it still something that I could put on my resume? I would appreciate any input on this matter. Thanks in advance!</p>
<p>I am not sure what kind of work you want to do when you graduate, but any job is better than no job. It is important to have some sort of work experience. At my daughter’s school, Cornell, they offer a semester course in NYC for law, IB, and various other careers. A course would run for 3 weeks, taught by someone in the business, then you would do internship at a firm (banking or law firm) for 3 weeks. Often students are then able to a summer internship the following summer. Does Penn offer similar type of courses?

In reading the description, I am not sure you have to be a Cornell student. There is a number you could call. My daughter signed up for the course last summer, because of the economy, they didn’t get enough students, but she was still able to get an internship. It was a very good experience for her. </p>
<p>Here is a thought also… Instead of your dad offering you a job, have your dad ask a friend to offer you a job at a different firm, and your dad could offer his job to his friend’s kid (a swap). In doing so, it wouldn’t be so apparent that your dad got you the job.</p>
