Summer Math/Physics Courses

Can anyone comment on what is like to take Math 230 and/or Math 251 during the summer? Also, Physics 212. Thanks

A 2 or 3 credit class over the summer isn’t bad, but a 4 credit course, in my opinion, is a bad idea. Math 230 and 251 are both 4 credits. Phys 212 is 4 credits as well and requires a lecture and recitation, as you probably know. Fitting that into a summer schedule may be challenging, if it’s even offered at all (I’m not sure if PHYS 212 is offered over summers).

Math 220 is a 2 credit course-- perfect for the summer.

All the courses listed are offered over about 8 weeks (June 18-August 15) during the summer (a little more than half the time of a regular semester). So for a four hour course, instead of being in class for 50 minues 4 days a week, a student is in class for about 75 minutes 5 times a week. Of course, courses with labs are in class for more hours. Based on this, it is not unreasonable for a student to take somewhere between 4 and 8 credit hours during the summer. Also. if I remember correctly, students who participated in LEAP take 6 hours of credit in one of the six week sessions.

Right, and students typically do take 6 credits during the summers. However, it’s usually two 3-credit courses every day for 75 minutes. A 4-credit course is more work than a 3-credit course when you compact it into 8 weeks. I wouldn’t like having to learn a math course over the summer unless it’s fewer than 4 credits, but that’s just me.
