Not sure if it’s same for the winds, but my son went to Brevard last summer to play viola in the hs orchestral studies. They had rotating seats for each concert cycle. I believe they had 4 concerts, but also had chamber groups.
Hi D24 (wind player_ has turned down Brevard for BUTI as Brevard started too soon for her school year; she has done BUTI twice and is very happy to go back but was also excited by doing both orchestra and wind ensemble in one go at Brevard. She will def apply for the college division next year. Not sure that that helps you - obv we think BUTI and the Tanglewood experience are great and if costs are also better i would incline that way, but Brevard equally looks fab!
Both BUTI and Brevard rotate their chair assignments - no worries! Both are amazing experiences! Congrats to your student!
I can’t speak for horns but have heard very good things about Brevard from other parents. It’s a very well-run program.
That being said, BUTI has a bit more ‘cachet’, if you will. Also, I have the impression that once you get into BUTI, you often will get accepted moving forward. Someone here could very well contradict me on that, not really sure how/why I got that impression, possibly some forum post I read somewhere.
It if were my child, and I was not not out any money, I’d go for BUTI. But I think it will be wonderful either way you do it.
Still waiting on Center Stage Strings first tier waitlist to move. I contacted them 1.5 weeks ago, they said ‘bear with us, you’ll hear within 2 weeks.’ So I guess we have a few more days but as early applicants’ decisions were due March 8th, wondering what could be taking this long? Anyone have the inside scoop on how things work and how waitlists move?
I know that at BUTI, at least for ensembles, if something opens up, they review all the applicants for best fit. So I could see how that could take some time. Maybe similar for CSS?
Does anyone have any feedback on Aria Academy or PIMF, especially with regards to more solo string performance?
Which program at PIMF?
DD was looking at the PIMF solo performance prep program (for cello)? I think they have 1 week and 2 week options. Please share any feedback you may have, or if you have recommendations for other programs that have good solo performance prep.
How old? My S24 did the orchestra camp several years go. He was not impressed. But, he did have a lesson with the principal for his instrument from the Philadelphia symphony who was great. He was supposed to go to Aria last summer but then got into another program and didnt go when he got into a chamber program.
Thanks for the helpful info!
The CSS program is growing in reputation and stature, so I think they are a bit overwhelmed. They are also trying to track down individual families for commitments, which should have happened by now. They do aim for some kind of balance among ages, levels, and instruments, so it is a bit tricky. Hopefully you will hear soon!
I don’t know much about PIMF, other than I closed the browser as soon as I saw the price tag! I know one person who has gone to the solo program and had a great experience. But it is hard to get past the price tag. It is significantly more costly than most of the other programs. Maybe they give a lot of aid?
I haven’t looked this year but the two week program my son did was about the same price as every other program he has attended.
D23 decided to take her name off the waitlists for Aspen and Brevard, as flute sections are really small in both orchestral programs. She committed to summer study abroad program in London. Still waiting on Orford’s decision for a shorter chamber program in June.
Sorry to ask about this multiple times, but has anyone experienced any movement from the Bowdoin waitlist? Edit: Did not mean to reply to a thread, but rather make a new comment!
Sorry, Bowdoin is a strings only program, I am not able to help. I think a lot of other people here can though.
I just looked, that is an insane amount of money for a program
Vivace also has good solo prep
They give aid/scholarships but not a lot- unless they’ve changed the last few years
sending you a PM
