DS (sophomore in college) just got accepted to Rocky Ridge’s college intensive program and also offered counseling jobs later in the summer at their youth music camps (he says between that and scholarships, the tuition for him would be more than covered). He has more applications out there, but I think this is one he’s excited about. I need to talk to him to get all the dates and details; he just texted me last night; I think he’s working on an elaborate plan to go to Colorado for this, fly to CA for a bass clarinet intensive, then back to Colorado for the camp counselor job.
Where in CA is bass clarinet intensive?
San Francisco Conservatory
FYI for anyone considering BUTI… they may have extended their deadline to March 6th. We got an email from them regarding scholarship award and it included language regarding accepting the invitation from the program (not just regarding the award) and that deadline was March 6th, not March 1st. So I don’t know if that is being extended to all? I spoke with them on the phone last week and let them know we are still waiting to hear from other programs and maybe that’s why they extended further for us. I would hope it’s for everyone because this rolling deadline thing is pretty tricky, lol…!
Might be worth contacting them if you need more time with your decisions.
Hmm interesting - was it 1st march on your original notification?
I have a 13-year-old (8th grade) cellist who is attending four weeks of local music intensives in Oregon. This will be his third summer with these programs, and I think he is starting to “outgrow” what these programs offer.
I have two questions about summer programs…
-
What age was your student when they started attending higher-level or longer summer programs?
-
What higher-level programs are available in the Western states? I’m not sure I’m ready to send my kiddo to the east coast by himself.
Thank you!
Yes, it was.
I reached out yesterday asking for an extension and was told no. They said unable to grant extensions and recommended calling the other camp and asking for a decision.
We are declining theirs anyway I think. But weird to have mixed messages.
Why are there two threads on Summer Music Festivals?
https://talk.collegeconfidential.com/t/summer-music-festivals-2024/3658836/14
Can these be consolidated?
Taggin @skieurope
Can you help us consolidate the two threads as abovr
Done
Hmmm, that is odd. Maybe because different instruments?
Mine was your kid last summer. She did a program that was pretty underwhelming. Better than nothing but I would not say we felt it was worth it, even if a lot cheaper. If he feels ready to move on, then definitely audition for higher level festivals. Some are still open, many are closed at this point.
I don’t know of any on the west coast but you might check with SF Conservatory and Colburn to see what they offer, if anything. I bet others here will know and can answer you.
Another poster here (I think TooManyViolins?) gave it the thumbs up. I don’t think based on attendance but said the teachers were excellent or something. It’s on my ‘Looking For Help’ thread if you search on that.
Or maybe a typo?
We are set for this summer, we have paid for his regular camps since I am not ready to send him someplace far away when he’s barely out of middle school. But I’m looking ahead to next year, since I think this might be the last year that his local camp is a good fit.
Have you looked at Idyllwild in Southern Ca?
Our kids both went to four week long summer music things starting summer after grade 8. They both went to New England Music Camp for three years. It was exactly what they needed at the time, a combination of serious music and camp fun.
Then DS went to BUTI for 2 years, EMF for 2 years and Aspen for one year. He did a summer intensive at Northwestern one summer for two weeks too.
The first Covid summer would have been the first, as a fifteen year old rising sophomore. He had never been anywhere and was scheduled to go to PIMF, which we liked as it was only for two weeks. It became virtual. The next year he ended up being more alone that we would have liked- he did Vivace and they were in a city, had to stay in a hotel, go to different buildings. But it was only for ten days and we ended up renting a place close by just in case.
West coast- there are some good festivals in Vancouver if you’re willing to hop the border!
any recommendation on festivals or string intensive in Vancouver or Canada in general?
