Summer Music Festivals 2024

Right now it is top of our list, but we only know people who went to the cello part and one teacher there.

D23 flute waitlisted - Brevard Orchestra College Division & Aspen.

Has anyone heard from Bowdoin Music Festival yet?

We only applied a couple of places. S26 got waitlisted at Tanglewood YAWE and accepted to 2-week workshop. But when Brevard came through, he was excited to do that as opposed to planning for BUTI and hoping for the best on the waitlist.

Next year we’ll have a better sense of how early to apply and where.

Good luck to your DD! I know some of the wind player placements are tough with so few spots.

Ascent has excellent faculty and wonderful leadership. Was a great experience for my child.

Thank you everyone for the Green Mountain (cello) feedback. Has anyone had any experience or heard about Chataqua Music Institute? All accepted get full scholarship.

Same here, and no, but I know teacher rec was received way past the deadline.

FYI,
Last year my son was originalyl waitlisting by Brevard but was admitted later with substantial scholarship money. So these waitlists move.

I was told by ICI that they are not maintaing a waitlist this year.

We’ve heard great things about Green Mountain. A former teacher had students go there (cello) who really enjoyed it. My DD is familiar with a few of the teachers there, so she’s excited about possibly going. Just waiting on some programs.

Would love to hear more about any negative feedback. Disappointing to hear if some of the other musicians are at a lower level or not as engaged (though the latter we’ve seen at other camps as well…)

On a side note, it sounds like there might be a few of us cello parents sending kiddos up to Vermont!

DS23 clarinet is waitlisted at Kinhaven (for the second year in a row, this time he applied with his reed quintet) and somewhere in Napa Valley. And didn’t get in to Chautauqua. Those were all of his tuition-free options, which I imagine has a lot to do with how competitive they are. Anyway, sounds like he’s settled on Rocky Ridge; he’ll do a two week college intensive, leave for a couple of weeks, and then come back for three weeks as a camp counselor for the younger kids program, which will cover the cost of his camp with some left over for travel expenses, etc. And then he just applied to the bass clarinet intensive, which he’s very excited about…so more logistics planning if he gets in there (it happens in between the college intensive and the counseling jobs). I guess we’re not seeing him much this summer :frowning:

For any voice majors out there- S22 is attending Music Academy (formerly Music Academy of the West) in the Studio Artist division- which is geared towards undergrads. It is a tuition and housing free program.

There is an instrumental component as well, but I am of course not familiar with the admissions process for that group.

I’ll let you know how he likes it!

Still waiting

Some of these places must have received a record number of apps.

I wonder how summer programs with late deadlines even get kids since so many are forced to make choices first week of March or before. There is one place my son applied that he really wants to go, but they won’t announce for another month. We already put a deposit on alternative because we can’t risk it.
I really wish there was more coordination on deadlines.

Glad we weren’t the only family that did this. Kid got into a program he is really excited for (heard early February) and wound up sending hefty deposit late February to not lose the spot. The only program he had not heard from when we paid the deposit was Bowdoin. If he manages to get into Bowdoin session 1, that does not conflict with the other program and we would consider trying to send him to both but Bowdoin session 2 wouldn’t work. It’s a bummer making these decisions without knowing all the results first.

My hesitation with a longer festival this year - is how do they work to get spending money for the school year? My daughter is just coming with me at one I teach at for 2 weeks. With 2 in college, do your kids work during the school year?

THis is the last year my son (S24) can do something I pay for. Next year he has to make some money or go somewhere free. I do not think that most kids can work during the school year unless it is work study.

Contact them and explain your situation.

I went to music school and my parents also were you need a job in the summer. I get it now with 2 in college next year. They definitely won’t have an allowance or my credit card. My hope is we pay for college with little to no loans but they will have to pay for their personal expenses.

My kid is working two jobs this year…a work study at the music library at his school and he’s also assistant manager of the wind symphony. And he’s also working part of the summer. Last year (summer after his first year of college), we paid for some stuff, but we told him we wouldn’t be able to do that this year. He didn’t work much his first year of college, though–he had a 3 hour a week thing, but other than that we wanted him to take some time and settle in, since we knew music is a very time-intensive major.

For us as well. My older kid worked all summer to save pocket money for college. This one will do the same next summer. This is the last summer of paying.
