They don’t judge based on where the student attends- maybe who the student studies with, but not the type of school. Some excellent teachers don’t run formal studios and teach at colleges
What is her interest? My kid, who didn’t get to play in orchestra during high school, found Brevard a very thorough and rewarding experience; he called it professional orchestra boot camp. That said, he loves chamber and has focused more on that since, but the Brevard experience was crucial to his development; he went up levels with the excellent teacher he had there.
Does anyone know when BUTI decisions usually come out?
two years ago S24 heard on February 24
Thanks! Fingers crossed for everyone!
Does anyone know when Brevard usually sends out acceptances? Thank you!
I think it depends on what they are interested in and what they have experienced in the past. Like if they do orchestra all year long but no chamber, then a chamber focused program can add to their experience in a way that orchestra can not, or vice versa. Also it depends on the goal. If the goal is to get a big name like Tanglewood on the resume then go for Tanglewood. In general though I do think the chamber/solo programs offer more for personal development because the learning/teaching is focused on individuals mores than the orchestral programs.
At least when my son attended Tanglewood and Brevard orchestral programs, there was a chamber component as a required part of the curriculum. It was not a major focus, but I believe 1-2 rehearsals a week with a faculty coach.
Just a generalization, but winds and brass tend to prioritize orchestral fellowships because the experience in orchestral rep is really important for resume building and auditions. And being part of a wind section within an orchestra is very similar to a chamber ensemble. One on a part and solo work for principal players.
Strings tend to gravitate to chamber group work where they have the opportunity to collaborate more intimately rather than playing as part of a large section in unison.
But it is really all about preference. All are great experiences.
Do you know anything about the brevard intensives? S24 is thinking of applying to one before hopefully doing research at school but I can’t figure out if they are worthwhile
No experience with the Brevard intensives. My son attended the college orchestra program in the summer after the pandemic closure. Brevard held only held one program (college orchestra) due to the need to have private rooms for everyone.
It looks like the intensive combines HS and college ages.
He did love his time there and felt it was well run with good faculty.
Does anyone know the level for the flute intensive at brevard? S24 is looking for a week or so of music and this fits. He is at an LAC finishing his first year.
Anyone have suggestions for quality summer programs for orchestral wind players that are still open for applications?
My son just learned today that he is an alternate for the second of two very high-level programs he was hoping for. (He learned about his first alternate spot two weeks ago.) This second one felt like a gut punch, so we are regrouping.
He didn’t apply to BUTI because the dates conflict with HS athletics. He has an app in at NSO SMI (but the whole Kennedy Center brouhaha has that in flux). Wondering if EMF or Brevard ever take late apps? Suggestions on any others to consider for a high level player who almost made the top, but just… didn’t?
I’m not too familiar with SMI for wind players (I only know about strings), but I do frequent Kennedy Center a lot and despite what the news is saying, there is really no visible change to it or its main programming. SMI has been good in the past and should continue to be so.
What are his time constraints again? I think Kinhaven senior is still taking applications
Birch Creek Academy - Symphony - is only 2 weeks, but it’s an awesome program up in Wisconsin and they tend to give some scholarships. Lots and lots of rep.
If your musician has some professors in mind, you may want to look up where they teach in the summer, and see if those programs are still accepting applications. Even if they have closed application, your musician can still email the professor to express interest in taking lessons in the setting of summer program. I don’t know about wind instruments but many string professors are willing to talk to the summer program people and add a couple of late participants.
I have the same question for BUTI 2025 decision. For 2024 summer, I heard BUTI decision came out on Feb 21.
Has anyone heard anything from ANY music camps/festivals besides Interlochen? I know that Madeline Island is announcing this Friday 2/28. I heard Meadowmount announced, and Morningside announced. We are specifically looking for BUTI, Bervard, and Ascent. Thanks!
I don’t remember who asked about Aspen. They sent out some invitations to college students. There may be more coming this week and next, as some of the students invited in the first batch choose between multiple summer festivals.
We haven’t heard from any places yet.
