Cello, String Quartet Program! Yes I’ve heard there could be last minute call-ups, just desperately want to know haha (I should be near the top of the waitlist)
Does anyone know what is the likelihood for getting off this BUTI waitlist? The cases I’ve heard were mostly of YAO or workshops
Aside from Interlochen Popular Music, Berklee Aspire, and School of Rock, can anyone recommend a high level performance-focused summer music program for advanced HS guitar or percussion students that includes rock, blues, and/or other non-classical styles - i.e. not only jazz?
Does anyone have experience with the New England Conservatory Summer Orchestra? My son (10th grade violist) is leaning towards that program and wondering if anyone else is attending this year or has been in the past. He was also admitted to Brevard, Kinhaven Senior, Castleman, Port Milford, and MSM, but is leaning towards NEC because of the repertoire (Shostakovich and Elgar) and doesn’t want to be away for the whole summer (NEC is a 2-week program, so that seems like the perfect length to him).
I’ve been reading through the Brevard and Interlochen comparisons and would love to hear thoughts for a High School Junior who studies Classical Voice/Opera. The vocal music faculty listed on both seem to be comparable and we’re feeling that Brevard might be more intensive for classical voice/opera specifically. Also, thoughts on if either looks better on a college resume – she won’t be able to do both this summer.
My son gave up a spot in the Cello Workshop
Anyone had experience with Zephyr? In Italy?
Thank you for asking this, my son and I would love to hear people’s experiences with the SOI program too!
My son will be there in Session One for viola. Hoping it’s a good experience! It will be his first time in a sleepaway program. I haven’t been able to find out much about the program, although I did find a video of last year’s summer concert on YouTube.
Does anyone have experience with Brevard Low Brass Seminar? College level.
My son is being encouraged to try to add in other Italian chamber festivals now that he will be attending one. Has anyone experience with any of the Italy-based festivals? College age.
Congratulations! No experience here - but please share how things go this summer!
Absolutely! Thank you. He said no to the Lawrence Chamber Festival as it is concurrent with Zephyr. That one is only two years old but has some unique opportunities for collaboration.
I got waitlisted for Brevard’s orchestral institute and flute seminar. What is the likelyhood I will get a spot and when do they usually send updates?
My son (17) will be at Brevard HS orchestral institute for violin this summer. Anyone have any experience at Brevard?
Has anybody heard of this one?
We looked at it as a backup before my daughter got her Menlo acceptance and thought it looked pretty good. And free is always good. Since it is the first year, nobody knows what level of students it will attract or how well it will be run. The guest faculty is amazing, but it looks like they will only be there briefly. I think one or two kids in our music program are going to go, but obviously nobody has experience yet!
Any recommendations for French Horn summer? My older daughters were violin and cello so I’m not as familiar with brass. My current 10th grade daughter wants to prepare repertoire for Summer 2026–she’s doing Interlochen Horn Intensive this summer (rejected for NYO:( --will try again next year) and volunteering as a counselor at a music summer camp. Next year she may want to do something more rigorous–during the school year, she plays with the SF Symphony YO. Thanks!
Not French horn, but a woodwind parent here. My kid had good HS/early college age experience with Interlochen, BUTI, Brevard. All with high level wind and brass players and faculty.
You might also look at Idyllwild which is at least on the same coast.
Brass section at Kinhaven is outstanding. Great place to go.
