S2 plays the trumpet, and I’d like to find a good orchestra that he can join for the summer. But everything I’ve found is a full-time, multi-week, commitment. He is doing other things this summer, and I’d like to find something that only meets once or twice a week (but keeps him practicing every day). Does anything like this exist?

NYMom, there may be more response if you ask your question on the music forum. [Music Major - College Confidential](Music Major - College Confidential Forums) There is a discussion over there on summer programs with openings.

I don’t think any official music program will meet only once or twice a week. Really you want some sort of pick up group.

Many towns have a “summer band”. It is typically comprised of volunteers. Around here, the band rehearses once a week and then plays on a different night. One concert a week for about 4 or 5 weeks. Check your town or neighboring towns to see if there is a Community Band…or Civic Band. I know this isn’t an orchestra, but your trumpet playing son will be playing much more in a band than in an orchestra…and this music is fun and most brass players like it.
