SUMMER- Orlando Sentinel Internship vs. UCSD Journalism program

I just moved to Florida in August 2006 from California and I am dying to go to a UC school for college. I have a 4.0 unweighted GPA and I get my SAT scores soon. I’m not a strong test taker… as I got a 1750 on my PSATs.

The PROBLEM- I got accepted into UCSD’s summer program, and because I am very interested in journalism I applied to take a journalism course there for three weeks worth college credits. However, I just found out I also got accepted for a summer internship at the Orlando Sentinel newspaper. I have to choose one because I can’t do both. I have to choose by this TUESDAY!

You should know that the UCSD program will help me with getting into a UC school being out of state… but this internship is amazing!

NEED HELP!!! I’m so torn!!

THANKS!!!

Does the program cost money? Is the internship paid?

Colleges will want to know these–there’s a distinction between being rich enough to afford a college’s summer program and smart enough to get into a highly selective program.

Personally, I would suggest the internship, but that’s based overall, not just on college admissions.

The UCSD program costs $3,000 without airfare… which will be a lot because I am coming from Florida. The internship is not paid.

internship. ahh, i would kill for a journalism internship.

ha, thanks! I’m pretty set on the internship as of now, but I just wanted to see what everyone else thought…

anyone else have any thoughts about this??

I would go with the internship. You’ll learn a lot on the job–and if you do well, you will get a good recommendation out of it that will mean a lot relative to your college applications and future job opportunities.
