Summer Performing Arts Programs?

I started a thread about this in the summer programs section but didn’t receive any replies so thought I’d try with the Cafe…any recs for summer '2011 for our daughter who’s interested in theatre arts and dance, singing maybe too? She’s searched the internet and came up with Interlochen and Long Lake in the Adirondacks but I’d like to see her on a college or prep school campus if possible.

Have you tried putting up a thread in the MT forum? About Interlochen: my d3 has a friend (a dancer) who attended for a summer and had such a great experience that she transferred there for her senior year, where she had another excellent experience. A friend of d2’s spent her last two high school years at Interlochen as a violinist and went on to Yale. Both students couldn’t have been more enthusiastic. The musician was truly brilliant, as well as a talented violinist, and her mother was quite pleased with the academics and the college counseling she received. (Doesn’t exactly answer your question, sorry - just putting out the great stuff I’ve heard about Interlochen!)

Interlochen is pretty amazing! My son attended one summer. Why the prep school or college campus?

Here is the link on the Musical Theater forum that has the list of summer programs.

I just thought that it would be fun for her to be on a campus so she could get a feel for college life. She’s not a Juillard calibre kid, just one who loves to be out there performing and has gotten some kudos from the teachers at school about it. I"m going to look into all of these that you’ve mentionned…looks good!

Interlochen IS a prep school campus. My daughter did her last two years of high school there and then worked in the summer program. You can’t do better than Interlochen.

There are a number of colleges and universities that offer summer musical theater and dance programs for rising h.s. juniors and seniors. The programs vary as to the competitiveness of admissions and the prior experience and training necessary to feel comfortable in the program. Some summer programs are audition based, some require h.s. transcripts, others just require an application. Some are intense conservatory style experiences, others are more laid back and designed for students of varying experience. There are also several camps, such as Stagedoor Manor, that are very well regarded. There are also studio programs available in NYC. The musical theater forum (under college majors) is a great place to get a ton of info.
