Summer Program Acceptance Chances with Poor GPA

I recently found an internship at a local university that I really want to attend, but my GPA is really low

Currently it is a 2.95 unweighted but this was due to the fact that I attended a magnet/specialized school and had trouble adjusting my freshmen year, and now attend my base high school as a sophmore where i get straight A’s and am very involved in extra-curriculars.

I am planning to take the SAT in January to meet the deadline for the program. My average score is around 1800 as a sophmore and I am working to improve upon it and my score is steadily increasing. If I get a good score on the SAT and my teacher recommendation letters are good… can it outweigh or lessen the impact of my poor GPA on the professors that review my application?

Thanks for all your help!
