I can answer part of your question! My daughter attended MPulse last summer. It was an incredible experience for her. The program, the faculty an the other participants were amazing. We were so pleased with how much she enjoyed it and her growth. My husband and i went to the 'showcase" at the end of the 3 weeks and were astonished at the level of talent overall of these 30-ish kids. It is definitely a program that attracts the cream of the crop. We know about 6 or 7 personally, who have attended the program in the last couple of years, they are at UMich, CCM and Syracuse in musical theatre now and all had multiple acceptances. Thatās not to say that going to a pre-college program for a particular school gives any one a leg up, as we know a couple who went to Mpulse who didnāt get in a Michiganā¦however my point is the caliber of kids who attended that program, seem to do well in college auditions too. So, is it competitive? Yes, my guess it is quite competitive, especially for girls. Last year there were 19 boys and 13 girls, i think.

Thank you so much MBB for taking the time to respond in such detail. We just were hoping that if my dd was accepted that she would be better equipped to do well at the college auditions in general. Did your dd end up appyling to mt programs for college this year? Just curious as to how it is going, if you care to share.

My daughter is actually a junior this year, so we still have a year. She auditioned for MPulse really just to practice auditioning, and was of course slightly hopeful sheād get a spot, never really thinking she would get in, so it was a bit of a shock to us all(and the pocketbook) when she received the acceptance letter!

Her growth at MPulse was really amazingā¦part of it is simply that the kids are all exceptionally talented and motivated. They worked and worked and bonded with each other and worked. They helped each other and learned from each other and worked and worked. I think it was a good place to see where oneās strengths were and where oneās weaknesses were at this point in life, in a bit more of a national stage than most kids have access toā¦which is incredibly helpful to them. My D came away understanding so much more about herself as a performerā¦which boosted confidence in lots of areas, and made her realize where she really had to work in othersā¦i think it couldnāt be anything but helpful for the college audition process next year! It was time very well spentā¦enough so that she is planning on auditioning again.

Please feel free to PM me if you or your daughter has any really specific questions. Im sure mine would be glad to answer as am i.

Not affiliated with a college but Broadway Dreams does summer camps for a week long intensive. You get to work with Broadway professionals and network with them. My S attended this last year and is still in contact with the individuals that he worked with. The price isnāt bad and there is a cabaret style show and the end of the week. Check out the site [The Broadway Dreams Foundation](http://www.mybroadwaydreams.com)

I wanted to rave about this program that my son did last summer. [Home-Vineyard Arts Project](http://www.vineyardartsproject.org). and they have a facebook group with lots of pictures from last summer. It is a small (I think about 30 students) audition summer intensive - similar in program design to Broadway Theater Project but with much more personal attention. (My son has done both programs - vineyard and BTP). It was a wonderful experience from begining to end and I recommend looking into it as you search for quality summer programs.

I am more of a regular on the Music Majors part of this board, so I apologize if this has been discussed before. I happened to notice that Oberlin has a summer program called Oberlin in Italy. They are looking for three Theater Production apprentices who will assist with costumes, props, sets, lighting, makeup and stage management for a total of five performances of two different operas, in three different venues over a period of four weeks. Tuition is free for those accepted and it also includes Italian lessons five days per week. Housing is included, so your expenses would be the cost of getting to Italy plus living expenses other than housing while there.

thanks so much MYBROADWAYBABY for all of the information. My dd went to Michigan last weekend to audition in person. So, weāll see if she gets in. I think she said the accompanist said there were close to 200 auditioning (either in person or on DVD) and about 40 spots. I would imagine your dd would be accepted this summer if she attended last year!

Anyone else on the board have someone that applied and/or auditioned for MPULSE at U Michigan?

We heard there were similar numbers auditioningā¦last year there were 19 boys and 13 girls accepted (i think thats right!) and apparently that was one of the biggest groups everā¦first time my daughter was ever in a theater related experience where there were more boys than girlsā¦!

Last year the letters came a few days prior to the deadline, so hopefully that will be the same this yearā¦we are west coasters, so it took a couple of extra days to get to usā¦

From what we understand there is really no guarantee she will get it againā¦its all relative to the pool of applicants at handā¦but we are sure hoping!

Hi MBB and Amy ellen,
My d also applied for MPulse this summer - 2nd session. She did it by tape as we live in Oregon. Se weāve been waiting a long time, as it had to be in, in January!

The wait has been made a little easier due to the fact that sheās been accepted at OCU. IF she gets into MPulse, I donāt know how sheās going to make a decision!

She attended UArts last year and loved it. It was a good start for this type of program as it was nonaudition. But there was still tons of talent! I was very impressed with the program, the individual attention the kids got, the evaluations they personally wrote for each student, and the organized way in which the whole program was run. Not one youād want to do more than once, as it wold be repetitive, but a nice balance of work and play, and Philly is a GREAT city!

Sheās a junior, also, so I am also hoping these programs give her a leg up in auditions. This is a very intensive undertaking!

I think it might be too late - the deadline was in January. But I remember their website saying they might accept late applications if there are still openings - or something like that. You should contact them and ask.

As you might have seen, theyāve already started to send out acceptances. My best guess is no, but it may be worth a call.

from the website:
You may audition on campus OR submit a DVD. VHS tapes and mini-discs will not be accepted.
January 25 : FIRM deadline for ALL application materials for Ann Arbor audition requests
January 25 : Priority deadline for ALL application materials for recorded auditions
Late applications (with recorded auditions only) may be accepted if openings remain. Click here for current information regarding openings.
Decision letters will be mailed by March 30. Sorry, no decisions will be given by phone or email. As a courtesy to the Musical Theatre Workshop faculty and other applicants, please notify the MPulse office and withdraw your application if you commit to another summer program anytime during our review/decision notification process.

If you wish to audition in Ann Arbor, all application materials must be received by January 25.
You should apply online as soon as possible so that your materials can be reviewed and, if your audition is approved and confirmed, you can make travel arrangements. The online application will prompt you to print out an Application Confirmation page that you will sign and mail to the MPulse office along with your resume, photos, sealed official transcript, and sealed recommendation. After all of these items are received and reviewed, you will be contacted via email regarding your audition request. Ann Arbor audition dates cannot be held, scheduled, or confirmed without a complete application on file. Requests for audition dates other than February 20 cannot be accommodated.

For those sending recorded audiitions, all application materials must be received by January 25 for priority consideration. Applications (with recorded auditions only) may be accepted after these deadlines if openings remain. Click here for current information regarding openings.

So, it looks like there is no way for you to audition on campus, but there might possibly still be a chance if you send your video in. Iād call. Good luck!

It sounds like you know of acceptances already sent out. Can you tell us if they are boys/girls and how the acceptance came, email, regular mail etc??

I have a friend who was notified of his acceptance yesterday, I donāt know how, thoughā sorry! I also saw the facebook group of accepted students, which seems to have about 5 boys and 10 girls (but thatās definitely not a definitive resource!), which he has not yet joined.

Amyellen: At least 15 kids have been accepted that my daughter knows aboutā¦i think she said 5 boys and 10 girls so far. There were 2 from our hs and 4 from our area, all received emails.
