My D and I met with Halley of Arts Edge recently when she visited our area. We were very impressed with Arts Edge summer program and application assistance program. She provided references both from parents and college admissions personnel who gave excellent feedback

theartsedge is a great program and worth looking into.

After getting out our MPulse packet (which, I agree, was a lot of work!) weāre looking next to the BTP February audition in our area. I appreciate the positive info about the program, since we know a few kids who did it and loved it a few years ago, but had heard it had changed recently. Was it an issue for your HS daughter, or anyone elseās, to be on her own with a 21 and over crowd? Appreciate any thoughts on that. My daugther is also planning to apply to Northwestern and maybe to Carnegie Mellon, U of Arts and maybe Ithaca. Iām assuming that MPulse is the most competitive since it seems to be the smallest? Any ideas about that, or which of the others may be less competitive, so we can have a safe choice. Btw, my daughter did CAP21 in NYC last summer and loved every minute, in case anyone is considering that.

I am also concerned about the BTP supervision issue. It appears kids are pretty much on their own with adults overseeing the living areas. Anyone have experience with that? That is why Iām thinking now MPulse might be better. You are with kids your own age in a college dorm setting. The other pro with MPulse is you see more a college program than camp/masterclass program. That might help when thinking about college. Of course, if you only get in one you have no choice. insight?

check out art and architecture summer at penn, supposed to be a great program tought by penn faculty

We are also hesitant about the accommodations for BTP and being with such a wide range of ages. D is looking for a 3 week intensive program with housing on a college campus. NU and CMU are longer. MPulse is so small, I donāt think anyone can count on getting in there. Also, she wants a program that is not focused on putting on a big show (leaves out Stagedoor and OCU). Any other suggestions?

My son just turned 16 so the New York schools are not an option. You have to be 17 to live in their dorms. He will audition for BTP and we will take a closer look if her gets in. No need to worry until we know if heās in. Our other option is USC. It is a non- audition program so everyone gets in. The problem is that it is over $6,000 if you live on campus! I plan to fill out a request for financial aid but if that doesnāt happen, we live close enough that he can drive it each day. Not ideal- but a definite option. We considered Interlochen but that is very much a ācampā (like in CAMPING!) I have a friend whoās daughter went to OCU and loved it. She said the show was very good.

At CMU, the kids are free to go around Pittsburgh on their own when not in class. They have to sign in for curfew at night.

Someone suggested a summer MT workshop at CCM. The info stated that it was for ages 14-18 from 9:30-4:30 for 2 weeks⦠sounds a little too basic. Taught by CCM faculty and others. Has anyone had a child attend in the past.?

Regarding BTP and supervision, I canāt speak to the new format as my daughter attended two years when they did stay on campus. It was an amazing program for her. I will say that the administrative staff and instructors of BTP are exceptional!! The age differences of the apprentices involved were never an issue for my daughter. The three weeks at BTP is very intense and there is not much time for socializing, part of why my daughter loved it so!! Most days were 8am to 11 pm, seven days per week. Again, I cannot speak to the changes that have been made, but I do know the staff involved and they are spectacular!

My D attended MPulse and i can say for sure that it is a VERY appropriate environment for a 16 or 17 year oldā¦she attended post junior and senior year. The MPulse staff (who run all of the MPulse programs, not just the MTWorkshop) are truly amazingā¦i felt very very secure leaving her there, knowing she was in good handsā¦and that all of the kids were monitored during the non-programed time (which isnāt much time at MPulse). The kids are in dorms with other high school students. They have college aged counselors, plus all of the Staff adultsā¦outings were supervised and there was always someone around if they needed help (illness, etc). One thing to note about MPulse, which seems to be unique, is that absolutely no computers, cell-phones are allowed for the entirety of the 3 weeks. The kids have a phone in their room that they can make and receive calls on (with a calling card), so you can check-in, etcā¦but their time is so full, that they donāt have a lot of time for phone calls. It turned out to be an amazing gift to be so āunpluggedāā¦i think my D was quite grateful, after she got over the initial horror of the idea!

I have said this before on this forumā¦MPulse has definitely been the most valuable experience in MT/Theatre my D has hadā¦without exception. Itās a premium program in every way. Wishing all your kiddos the best of luck in getting a spot this year!

Thanks for all the feedback on MPulse and BTP. MPulse does seem perfect, but as one mom said, we canāt count on it at all, since itās so small and seems so competitive. Does anyone know anything about the specific changes that have taken place at BTP over the last couple of years? Would appreciate any info on that. For the mom looking for a less competitive, college campus-based program, Ithaca and U of Arts might be possibilities. I think they are both 3-4 weeks, though Iām not sure, and I have the impression they are less competitive, but donāt have any details. Meanwhile, weāll be hoping for good news from MPulse and good luck to everyone elseās kids who are applying!

Post if you get news!

West Coasters- BTP added LA audition on Feb 13

It would be helpful to list programs that accept/are for college students, as well, because Iāve found a few, and would be interested in hearing about more.

Than you Soozievt. I will clarify.

The Boston Conservatory Summer Intensive Program is for High School, College and Proās

Weāre on the same track as everyone else here. My D is a junior and she applied to Interlochen, MPulse, and BTP. Weāre heading up to Michigan for auditions so we can check out the campus for next year. We were heading to FL to audition for BTP but ended up doing it online and she was accepted. She turned down chorus in two shows for either program as we have been advised that she needs education more then performing. In talking to the BTP people, they sound wonderful. We talked to a girl who went last year as a rising senior who loved it.
My D has been at debate camp on college campuses the last two years. I admit it will be different having older kids there but itās really been fine. Theyāre off to college the year after with lots of older kids as well so thatās truly not a concern of mine.
Sheās thrilled with BTP and now weāll see about Mpulse. Not holding my breath

fourkidsmom, did the BTP alum comment on the accommodations? My concern with BTP is that they stay in a hotel. I was hoping to hear some details about the safety and condition of the hotel. Thanks!
