In case anyone is interested in a Summer Stock experience, here’s the link to the Summer Stock Austin website. The company consists of high school and college students only and they put on 2 fantastic shows each year - this year they are Cabaret and Sweet Charity. It is by audition and there is no cost to attend, but if you are not from central Texas you would have to secure housing. There are also mentorships available for college students.

It’s obviously too late to participate in 2010, but if you are interested you might want to go see one of the shows to get a feel for the quality of the program.

I’m sure this answer is to late to be of help to you, but I just joined CC today! For future reference though, our daughter attended the OCU program this summer and had the time of her life. They had classes in everything from music theory to acting to dance to voice each day and then worked on a show at night. At the end of the 3 weeks they did 2 performances of Urinetown – she made amazing friends from all over the country and Canada and they continue to be friends via Facebook, visiting one another. It was a very happy, nurturing environment but she also learned a lot. She had a friend who went to mPulse who loved it also. Same 3 weeks. Biggest difference was at OCU they actually performed a show at the end. Mpulse had a performance that was a sampling of the things they had been working on. My daughter liked getting to work on an actual show and the quality of the performance was incredible, especially considering they only had 3 weeks to put it together. OCU also has an end of camp dinner cabaret where the students performed in small groups lots of different numbers from various shows. Both are excellent programs. (By the way, next year’s summer show at OCU will be Children of Eden).

My DD is going to audition for the OCU summer program for next summer. It’s one of the few/only? that will take students just finishing their freshman year. It sounds so wonderful, I really hope she gets in.

Yes! my 16 year old daughter was there this summer (from Texas) and had a great time. We went up to catch the show and it was incredible (Sweeney Todd). She was one of the very few from outside of Vancouver Island but they made her very welcome. Feel free to PM me if you need more info.

I see on here that there is a program entitled: “Spend the Summer at CCM” which takes place at the University of Cincinnati. Does this still exist? Can I get any contact info? Thanks!

I saw someone posted earlier about the BoCo VCI program. I didn’t see if anyone had responded about it, but I went to that program the summer before my junior year. It was extremely voice intensive: this is NOT an MT program for someone who wants to work on dance. I absolutely loved it and got a lot of great musical training there, but we didn’t have much training in dance or acting. We had a “movement” class, which was absolutely WONDERFUL, but not a dance class. But there was a lot of focus on the music/singing aspect. And there was also focus on acting while singing, on portraying emotions honestly and accurately through song. This was, I felt, the most rewarding part of the program. It was a terrific program. The faculty were extremely nice, creative, thoughtful and were all brilliant performers. I got lots of individual attention and they even wrote me a letter of recommendation for when I applied to my MT and VP colleges. They were a great resource and the program really helped me to grow as an artist. I came out of the program refreshed, confident and a better performer; specifically a better singer and actor. F there are any questions about the program I’d be happy to answer. If someone else already answered people about…just consider this a second opinion.

By the way…Boston Conservatory has a new Musical Theatre Dance Intensive for prospective triple threats (it will work on all areas) starting this summer. Might want to look into that.

My son has finished his DVD, etc. and I am mailing his application to MPulse. Later today he will upload to the Interlochen site. Then he just has the Broadway Theatre Project and USC to submit. Hope one works out!

We just started looking into programs for this summer and decided to apply to MPulse for my D. We are in a tizzy trying to get everything together to FedEx it tomorrow so it arrives on Wed. What other programs are you applying to? We were also looking at Interlochen, Tanglewood, Boston Conservatory MT dance intensive, and Ithaca. We also looked at NYU but she is too young. My D is a sophomore at a performing arts high school. We are looking for a strong program that focuses on training a “triple threat”. Any advise on what other programs to apply to?

My son is also a sophomore. His first 2 choices are MPulse and Broadway Theatre Project. I think he is applying to Interlochen. I think that’s due Feb 1? The only other will be USC, which is non audition- everyone gets. He does not want a dance centered program.

theatremomma your son cannot go wrong with those choices. My daughter attended BTP after her sophomore and junior year and her experiences were invaluable!! She did not attend MPulse, but if there summer program is anything like the UMich Musical theatre department that experience will be fabulous as well! My daughter is now a sophomore MT at Michigan and is loving every minute. She has stayed in contact with her BTP friends and contacts as well, in fact one is at Michigan with her! Best of luck to your son! :)

Tell me about BTP. Did you go to the shows at the end? What did she think of the overall quality of the program. Was the Florida summer awful? I think we were sold on MPulse but someone has advised us that BTP really has a lot of dance and it would improve his dance a lot. MPulse is a much smaller group, so I’m very interested in that also. Not sure which way to go if he gets in both. (Of course, that may not be an issue…)

theatremomma, we did go to the performances at the end. My daughter was there the summer of '07 and '08 and the performances were held at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center. The performances were excellent! I do believe that there have been some changes since she attended and that the performances may be held on campus, but I am not sure of that.

My daughter LOVED the program and never wanted to come home at the end of the three weeks. She loved the intensity and amount of rehearsals and master classes she was able to have. The faculty is so wonderful, knowledgeable and imparts such great lessons to these young apprentices! She has kept in contact with many of her instructors and she received some amazing letters of recommendations from some of the faculty that she used for college auditions.

The weather in Florida is hot and muggy and I think it rained most days for part of the day. They are in air conditioned studios for most of the day and night, so not really a factor. They are busy 7 days a week, 10 to 12 hours a day for the entire three weeks, which thrilled my daughter to no end!! lol

Many of the directors from different colleges come and speak to the students, CMU, CCM, Elon, etc. My daughter found that very useful and helped her in her selections of colleges to apply to.

My daughter is a singer/actress, more than a dancer, but I know she found the classes helpful. There are auditions for placement in the dance and voice studios which helped keep things moving at a good pace.

As I said before, I don’t think your son can go wrong with either decision…hope this information has been helpful. Best of luck!

Has anyone heard yet what the productions will be for Interlochen this summer in the high school division - both Musical Theater Production and Repertory Production?
