Summer Program Chances: Stop

Can people please stop posting “chances for xxx summer program” threads? For the most part, these are very selective summer programs, we don’t have stats on who gets accepted, and a very small amount of people actually get accepted. Even if you seem qualified, there may be someone that tells a compelling story about why they want to do research, hardships they’ve endured (and yet have succeeded), or whatever it may be that catches the eye of admissions personnel. Sometimes they specify what qualities they look for in your application, but most of the time we don’t know; therefore, these “chance me” threads are practically worthless. Look at some of the replies (or the lack thereof) to the threads; I’m sure you will agree.

In short, post if you want (no one is stopping you), but know the answers you recieve (if any) might not be very helpful due to the lack of information about the admissions process for these programs. It’s not like college chances where you might save money by narrowing down your list; most of these programs are free to apply for. Just submit your application and find out a month later, simple as that.
