Summer programs in CS or Engineering for 8th grader

Looking for a summer residential program for a rising 8th grader in computer science or engineering. He’ll be done with Geometry and can code in Python and Arduino already. He’s applied to some selective summer math programs (currently waiting to hear back) but it’s always good to have a backup, right? Thank you!

What state do you live in?

We are in California. Open to other locations though.

Check out Cal Poly SLO’s EPIC program.

Thank you! Ideally looking for something selective (GPA and recommendation-based) to help prepare for AP Computer Science A he will take in 9th grade.

Comp Sci A is not particularly difficult if already has basic familiarity with programing.

He has some basic familiarity, but definitely could use more experience. There are not too many other summer programs he could do after 7th grade (apart from some math ones), so looking for something that would be both fun and very educational.

Fun, educational, residential, selective. It is difficult to find something with all those attributes for a rising 8th grader.

Did you look at JHU CTY (center for talented youth)? Great residential camp programs and great kids. It was also fun for my daughter to try living at different universities over different summers. It helped give her a feel for size, urban/town, etc. CTY has a few computer science, as well as CS – adjacent options. Your child will need to test in though.

Stanford is a top option. I’ve worked with plenty of students who learned CS from the Stanford summer courses - I’ve heard good things and they have learned a lot.
