I was wondering how so many people get to be personal interns to prof.s at big-name institutions, or even small, local colleges. How do you guys find these opportunities? I’ve been trying for over a year to get one (live around Chicago area). Any hints would be appreciated greatly. Thnx.
And what is this Harvard/Yale/etc. book award?

Contact the science department! I worked on ecological research at Western Carolina University (thus my CC name) after I contacted their biology department. I suggest you start with the University of Chicago (if you haven’t already). If you can’t find a research opportunity, then there are a variety of summer research programs (RSI, NASA SHARP, Governor’s school if Illinois has one, etc.).

I haven’t the faintest idea what the [insert name] book awards are; nobody from my school has ever received one.

Yeah. I definitely got rejected from RSI. Told me, “there are many more qualified applicants we could accept.” I’m way too late for SHARP (isn’t it for underrep. minorities only?). I’ll try contacting them directly. Thnx.
