Summer School at a Community College

I have a question about registering summer classes. I am back in Chicago because I went to UIUC, and today I went to Harold Washington college(Community College). They won’t let me take math 207(calculus). I have finished Math 125 at UIUC and earned a A-. They said that Math 125 is equivalent to Math 099 at Harold Washington. In Harold Washington, Math 207 requires a C or better in Math 140, to be placed in Math 207. However, I used the Course Applicability System(CAS). It seems that UIUC equivalence for math classes, Math 012 is equivalent to Math 140 in Harold Washington. So, I was wondering. Shouldn’t I be able to take Math 207, from completing Math 125.

I know some of you guys wouldn’t be able to help, but can anyone give me some suggestions. I really want to take Calculus because I need it for Business school.
Or should i just complete a gen ed. Because i heard that it is preferred that i take calc for entering business school. Thanks for looking!!

Some schools base that off of your ACT/SAT math score. I’ve never been to a school that actually worried about pre-reqs (esp. at a CC).

^ i have!! i am going to take 2 CC courses this summer (im a junior) and i had to fit in the pre-reqs

Let me try to map this out…

You’re a buisness major

You want to take HWC’s Math 207: Calc I

At UIUC, you took Math 125: Elementary Linear Algebra, which is equivalent to HWC’s 099: Intermediate Algebra

To take HWC’s Calc I, you need to take THEIR Math 140: College Algebra

Additional Detail: UIUC’s Math 012: Algebra = HWC’s Math 140: College Algebra

Ok, so from what I gather, HWC’s College Algebra has a higher numbering than their Intermediate Algebra. The weird thing is that College Algebra = Middle/High School Algebra I and Intermediate Algebra = High School Algebra II, so you should be able to take calc.

ElectricTech is exactly right, but except being a Business Major. I’m undecided for right now. I find it awkward to be unable to take the class, when i took Math 125, which required a prerequisite of Math 012 which is just Algebra. And since i didn’t need to take the prerequisite to take Math 125. I should be able to take Calculus. I must state my point tomorrow when registering at HWC. Thank you everyone for your thoughts.

Can you just register anyway without asking? Try registering online and see if the system catches it… If not, ask a prof you’ve had in the math dept at your university to write a short email to the dept chair at the CC or go in and talk to the instructor him/herself

i tried to register online, but i have to register on campus, since i was a first time student and another student from another college. That’s a good idea to tell my professor to tell the chairman to let me take the course. Thanks for the idea.

Also, does anyone know if there is a partial payment plan for community college. I heard that HWC has a partial payment plan. Does that mean that I could pay my tuition slowly.

---- Below is HWC tuition charge, I believe if this is for if you want to pay tuition slowly------
:diamonds: Pre-Credit Registration Charge $25.00 non-refundable
:diamonds: Pre-Credit Tuition $20.00 per credit hour
:diamonds: Residents of Illinois Outside of Chicago 􀁣 $128.83 per credit hour (includes $20.00 per credit hour
fee + $108.83 out-of-district surcharge)
:diamonds: Out-of-State Residents & International $309.76 per credit hour (includes $20.00 per credit hour
students (Including all Visa Holders) fee + $237.76 out-of-state surcharge)

Oh I thought you had already tried to sign up for it…Ok here’s some options:
–Just don’t mention the other class when you’re registering. Worst case scenario is that you’d have to take it later on before you graduate.
–since you said that you need to take Calc before school starts, take both classes this summer (like half-term, fast-track, or whatever you call it there)
–try talking to a different CC and choose the one that doens’t make you 140
–take the placement test (this is usually offered any time of day in the test center-check the website for this) for the class. If you place high enough you can move to a higher level math class.

Make sure that UIUC doens’t require 140 before you skip it.

For the payment plan thing, if you talk to someone in the bursars office, they will know more. Some do offer payment plans, but you must sign up for it with the bursar.
