I’m currently a Pratt rising sophomore and I’m considering taking summer school in California. What are the advantages and disadvantages of taking summer school outside of Duke? I’ve heard that you should not take med school requirements outside of the school you are enrolled in if you are premed. Is this true? I could take organic chemistry, introductory biology or physics. Are there benefits to taking one over the other? Thanks in advance.

bump (10 char).

You heard correctly, although it’s probably not that big a deal. It’s my philosophy that you should avoid summer school entirely.

Anybody else have an opinion?

(Right now I WISH I could have avoided summer school entirely. Really. Life is better without it)

If you do choose to take pre-med courses at another school, keep in mind that sends up a bit of a red flag. Make sure the school has an excellent record for teaching those courses, and make sure to include the transcript of the course in your application materials. Having a “TR” for orgo is NOT going to do you any favors, but having an A- from a recognized school will.

Generally, the disadvantages are (1) you only get a transfer credit and not a grade and (2) you can only bring in four credits that way. Advantages are (1) cost (2) location and sometimes (3) only get a transfer credit and not a grade :)

As for DA (2), remember that medical schools won’t care what Duke does or doesn’t recognize – but it’d still be nice if Duke counted them.

If I do decide to do summer school, it would be at Santa Clara University. I would take three units (2 semester’s worth) of orgo. I’ve heard that their orgo program is pretty solid and the professor, Brian McNelis, is known for being good. How do you think SCU’s orgo program compares to ours? How exactly can I check if SCU’s orgo has an “excellent record”? Thanks again.

BDM: Why are you against summer school? I’m just curious, as I’m considering taking orgo at Duke next summer (Pre-Med), and I’m always looking for opinions/advice.
