USAJMO? yeah right failed aime 1 with a 4.

my reply here is a little delayed, but i’m a sophomore applying as well!
I agree that I’ll be more prepared next year, but I’m giving it a shot this year - if I happen to get in, next summer will be free for other opportunities!

^Exactly. There are a lot more programs that open up as a Junior, so getting SSP in this summer would be ideal. Then again, I’d miss out on a research mentorship (assuming I can land one locally in the first place), but there’s still one more summer and SSP is not something to pass up.

What a cruel prank that would be.

Wow, the people applying to SSP this year are amazing. I’m pretty sure, at this point, that I have next to no chance of making it. Oh well, but I would love to have the opportunity to meet one of you. I’m a US applicant, waiting in suspense like the rest of you.
Stats wise, not the best. But like previously mentioned, I am very math inclined I just love math and programming in general.
Anyway just wanted to let everyone know, good luck, I’m sure this April fools day will probably be interesting.

An April fool’s release was entirely speculation by collegezomg. IMO if patterns of release stay true to the past two years and the schedule described in the application, decisions will come out the second week of April. That’s just some more speculation, though x)

I did it before, but everyone’s getting really tense, so I’ll tell everyone again how you don’t need to be amazing at everything. I’m a US citizen but I live overseas. I’m still not sure if I was put into the international pool, despite being a US citizen, because I sent my application in a day later than the international deadline, but I told them I was applying as a US applicant. But then, I got a response at the same time as all the other international students, so I’m kind of confused.

Anyway that’s sort of besides the point, but not entirely; I think the acceptance rate for Internationals may be lower than for US applicants, but I’m not sure. If it is, what I’m going to say will be of even greater consolation.

I’m not sure whether to just say my scores and other stuff straight out, because on the one hand, those who have gotten or will get rejected may be frustrated that someone like me may have taken their place, but on the other hand those who are still awaiting a decision may be relieved slightly at how unremarkable I am. Nevertheless, here it goes.

First off, even as a junior I didn’t get into AIME (but I did get into British Math Olympiad). Secondly, my PSAT score was crap. I got 58 in reading and 76 in math. I only improved slightly on SAT with a 650 in reading and 800 in math. I haven’t done any physics competitions or anything like that. I don’t play a musical instrument or have any special talent in anything (I tried to make myself seem pretty good at soccer in my application though haha). I didn’t mention that I lead any clubs at school or that I had much of a leadership role in what I do. The only things which were kind of in my favor were my school transcript, teacher recommendations (I hope :P) and my essays. I’m quite surprised that I got in to be honest. But I’m glad they realized that my scores didn’t necessarily reflect my actual ability in the classroom and elsewhere in math and physics.

Anyway I’d be happy to here how much you guys own me in SAT and AMC and other things And I hope this was slightly comforting in your anxious waiting :)

APRIL 15!

My SAT score on my transcript was 1780 while the ones I sent today were 1940…I hope it’s helpful x_x Definitely not measuring up to what everyone else has, but I hope they can see my passion through my essays :)

Drewsuf: you sound kind of like me… I didn’t really mention many ECs, just interest in math/physics, and I didn’t make AIME this year (due to some major stupidity on both AMCs x_x). So I guess I’m more optimistic about my chances now.

On the other hand…

72/665 is approximately an 11% acceptance rate. That’s about as difficult as Caltech or MIT… D:

Thanks for the consolation, Drewsuf.

Next week through April 15! Woohoo!

Missed USAMO by 1 question on the AIME and waitlist for the US Physics Camp (never happened) but I did indirectly include in my application that I will successfully make both of them this year, would that make any difference or would they consider me as someone who just is par in math/physics but not good enough?

lol my chances seem slim since my grades/SAT’s aren’t exactly stellar.

Darkinvader, your math/physics ability sounds more than good enough. But they put a large emphasis on your teacher recommendations, essays, and overall how your personality comes across to them, so hopefully you did ok there :)

Hi…I am an international applicant from India…I applied to SSP as a sophomore but got rejected…i dont know why…my stats were pretty good (http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1113932-what-my-chances-getting-admission-mit.html?highlight=what+are+my+chances+of+getting+admission+to+mit).
The only problem was I sent my MOCK SAT scores as I didnt write the real one. Do you think this must have counted against me? My mock sat scores were decent though…
Anyone from India who got selected? or any high school sophomore?

Nash1995, there’s no way of knowing why you were rejected. Perhaps you simply weren’t good enough, or maybe you didn’t show enough interest in your essays, or in science and math in general.

Worrying about it now doesn’t seem helpful, and you can always apply next year :)

Also if anyone is concerned with financial aid, I can tell you they are extremely generous!

I showed quite interest in my essays…as far as my stats are concerned…I got selected for 3 international olympiads (astronomy, linguistics and philosophy) and will be representing my country at these olympiads in 2011

Nash1995, it’s hopeless to over analyze this whole thing now, the decision has already been made. Here’s an excerpt from the site:

Drewsuf, thanks for the heads-up. I’m pretty concerned about the cost of funding it, just in case of the minuscule chance that I get accepted.

okay mrfairladyz we get it. you are humble and ebullient. please stop.

-_- Sorry if I irked you with my terribly offensive posts.
