Summer Science Program (SSP) 2011

YOO who else got an email from Mr. Bowdon saying that they’ll send out decisions by april 15 and whatnot?

I did!
Hoped it was a good sign, probably sent it out to everyone who applied.

I got it as well. I don’t think I got in, but we’ll see. I’m only a sophomore (I’ll be 18 next June), so that hurts me. I can’t do much physics, but I can do calculus. However, I had no way of proving that other than the teacher recommendation.

I think he sent it out to everyone as well. Here’s the full text, in case anyone is wondering:

nothing terribly offensive, but the following post made me want to vomit:

I admire your enthusiasm for the program, but I don’t get how you can be so stoked for a program you haven’t been to yet.

I can certainly see how I came off as annoying from that post, but I was just kidding around. I won’t do any laundry, nor will I be serenading anyone with my clarinet.

I guess I’m so enthusiastic because I’ve been spending a lot of time thinking about the program (and similar ones) and it seems pretty awesome to me (from reading the stuff online, watching videos, talking to others in the threads, etc.). At my school, things are pretty mundane so any chance I get to be around more gifted people (science/math competitions and related things) is always amazing, and getting away from home is always great, too. So five weeks away from home doing nerdy things with brilliant people who share similar interests as I do is something that’s been on my mind a lot for the past few weeks. I’ll be disappointed if I’m rejected, but I can understand why, and absolutely elated if I’m accepted. In the mean time, I’ve been keeping optimistic along with other CCers to pass the time with less stress.

Anyway, I’ll tone down my chipper posts for the next week or so, for everyone’s sake ;)

cool

where do people in here want to go to college?

berkeley! :)

Definitely one of the top sixteen. But of those, these stand out:
*Harvard
*Princeton
*Columbia
*Caltech
*MIT
*Dartmouth

Pdawggy, seriously? Mrfairladyz isn’t doing anything wrong, and neither is anyone else. Why did you suddenly have to create an environment of hostility? And as for your previous comment, how can you say ‘I don’t get how you can be so stoked for a program you haven’t been to yet’? That’s like saying, ‘why are you so excited about applying and getting accepted into Harvard? You haven’t been there yet’. Really?

I’m with drewsuf and mrfairladyz on this. I think it’s fair to say I’m excited about turning 17 even though I’ve never done that before.
And quite frankly, this looks even better than cake and a junior license (which isn’t even useful).

haha i think we’re all stoked at the prospect of being actively engaged with some of the most brilliant minds in the nation, and being forced to think critically about cutting-edge scientific problems, an opportunity many of us crave.

it seemed to me that mrfairladyz was being really artificial in hopes of impressing the ssp admissions committee (which is probably viewing this thread).

I don’t want to come across like I’m not excited. but my mind isn’t blown by the idea.

Unless Mrfairladyz applied to SSP under the legal name “Mrfairladyz,” it seems unlikely that his offer to wash Mr. Bowdon’s underwear was really a thinly-veiled attempt to boost his admissions chances.
I do, however, admire your very level-headed approach to the whole process. I’m sure many of the 665 applicants would benefit from tempering their excitement with a small dose of apathy.

Hmm. I doubt online forum posts are part of the application process, but just in case, I did apply as mrfairladyz.

well it did seem like he/she went out of his/her way to point out some distinguishing characteristics that could identify him/herself (sophomore + specific classes etc). But whatever, let’s drop it.

which campus do you guys think sounds better?

Westmont has JPL and the beach. Sorrocco has the VLA. Both sound awesome, but I think it also depends on the people - last year’s NM group seemed like a very fun bunch.

Westmont is in Santa Barbara… nuff said. But I’m still glad I’m going to NM because I’ve never been there and it’ll be a really cool and different experience for me. That and the date is better for me :stuck_out_tongue:
Oh and I was hoping the sky would be clearer than at Westmont because of SB’s marine haze. But apparently last year there was too much cloud cover at NM and they couldn’t actually use the telescopes? Instead they had to use results from a telescope in Peru or something? That sounds interesting haha. Does anyone else know about it?

I live in NY, so westmont was my first choice because Socorro starts before school has officially ended for me. On the other hand, I didn’t want to reduce my already-slim chances of being admitted, so I didn’t rule out Socorro. Though it would take some major schedule-juggling to make it possible. i.e. I basically don’t show up for the last two weeks of testing (it’s just regents, no one cares).
