I love this thread!
Johnny, I totally agree with you. That SexyAznPrincess might be Amery.

@Nabil: double clap. koo.

I had this idea of creating an username called johnnery, just putting that out there…

Well duh, the location “in a cookie jar” pretty much makes that obvious lol

I think what I loved most about SSP was befriending an asian guy with huge jugs, rubber band wars, watching Hard Gay on the projector and being walked in on while doing so by pretty much every adult, thought to be homosexual or at least sexually confused by one of our advisors for 5 of the 6 weeks, and convincing one of our female TAs that our 2 male TAs had a thing going on between them. Oh and all day 24/7 in the labs just blasting…

FEELIN SO FLY LIKE A G6

Socorro > Ojai/Westmont btw

What I loved most about SSP was that tragic day when my cellphone fell into the pool, which I later put into a black sock after we filled it with rice, which I later put into a microwave in the cafeteria for 5 minutes where it burned and changed color from black to brown, which I then hanged on the tree next to the dorm. And after all of that, the cellphone still didnt work.
Yes, prospective applicants, this is what SSP was like.

wow.

SSP sounds like a lot of fun.

sadly i don’t think i have a chance of getting in ><

i have no SAT/ACT scores yet and im taking bio/math 2 in january. so i cant taek the SAT by then.

i took the PSAT by the school and i probably did crappy on it (it was a horrible day that day. i had an ap chem test and some family issues so i was pretty down)><

i have been looking at this program since around august but sadly i screwed up my first half of the semester by getting all b/b+ ><

also if i do apply, would they care if i took Comp Sci 3/4 (Like a prerequiste for AP COMPsci nextyear) Honors Regents Physics(took it over the summer), Precalc honors and AP chem (both in school), and a semester of AP PHYsics B (online course gonna complete the second semester in the srping). i plan on taking 5 ap tests. (AP micro/macro, chem, psych, physic b)

i really wanted to get in
my gpa is crap also. 3.33225 UW

I’m not entirely sure how they make the decisions, but there’s no reason you shouldn’t have a chance. virtually everyone that applies has a shot because it’s self-selective in that only those interested in math/science end up applying. And that’s a lot of what they want to see, the interest. Demonstrated success in those fields I imagine is impressive as well.

For SAT/ACT, you can take the January ACT if you’d like. Or you can take either one during February. Both should be fine for the deadline (Feb 28 if you’re in the US). I would think it would be good to have some score under your belt by the time you’re application is in, but I know several people who took the SAT for the first time (never taken the ACT) AFTER they got into SSP so clearly it’s not a requirement.

You don’t sound like you’re so discouraged that you’re not willing to apply (I hope that’s not the case) so really just dedicate yourself to the application. If you can write the essays, you’re definitely not out of the running.

… though I wonder, who is 00ubermensch and what does my location make obvious?

I have a feeling that ubermensch is Neil. But that’s just a guess.

Never be scared to apply umers56. Even if you get the scores after the deadline, you can still email Mr.Bowdon and send the electronic report to him. He accepts those; he did for me. I retook the SAT, got better scores, and asked him if I can send it. He is really nice, don’t be afraid to email at all.

I applied last year as sophomore…and was flat out rejected. (I think its because I hadn’t taken calculus or physics at that time). This year, I am wary about appling to SSP and facing a repeat decision. After combing the website, the program seems great and the people seem amazing, and if accepted, I would say yes without a doubt, but I don’t know if I should invest the time with the application.

Here’s my stats:

Courseload:
Biology, Chemistry, Currently in Honors Physics. Also currently taking Calculus BC, AP Computer Science, and self-studied AP Biology last year (got a 5). I don’t know if this will cut it, but hopefully this part of the app shouldn’t be the one that breaks me, right?

Recommendations:
Decent. Not too bad, not too great.

Science EC:
A bunch of science competitions. Member of a couple of science clubs. Nothing exceptional. Seeing that there really isn’t a slot for science EC on the application, I take it that these aren’t really that important? I know for some other programs, they view science ECs heavily (as in research involvement, etc.)

Essays: We shall see =).

So do you guys think I have a shot? I don’t want to miss an incredible opportunity.

most definitely. I had no science or math related extracurricular and my classes where all IB assigned. So nothing too sciency.

Work hard on your essays. :)

“Sophomores may also apply, although most sophomores should wait a year to avoid being disappointed. Apply as a sophomore if a) you will turn 17 before next August, or b) you are already taking calculus. Click here to be reminded by email in your junior year.”

Don’t let the people who made the SSP website win. Prove them wrong or just apply for the awesomeness of a chance at acceptance. Not applying for fear of rejection would be a terrible decision.

hi! can i join this thread? im thinking about applying to ssp but im really nervous … im very interested in the sciences but i must admit that my weakest scores are in math and science. im a junior, hispanic, have a 3.7 GPA. im involved in many extracurriculars, am involved in university-level research projects, and i think i can get good recs. however, im not like an AMAZING genius student. do i have a chance?

also, any ssp alumni, how was the experience? was it fun? was it diverse?

thanks :)

what do you like to do for fun?

put down watch futurama

@collegezomg. Of course!!! Any prospective (and anyone, really) applicants are more than welcome to join.

If you want to hear some alumni reviews, flip to the previous pages of the thread. Starting mainly from the second half of the first page. So far its basically been a chat of the alumni from last year about how great of a time we had. I don’t think dazzling stats are really that big of a part, if you read the alumni viewpoints, you will see, being yourself and writing essays is really the big thing.

I know, I know. You think this is just what everyone says, be yourself, it can’t really be that simple can it? You will probably still think that until after applying. That’s what I thought before I surprisingly got in.

The most important thing is really that simple.

Wish you good luck!!!

Hello,
I was wondering if there were any official acceptance statistics for SSP since I couldn’t find any online.

Thanks

Amery, they change it each year, so idk about futurama…

I’m planning on applying for SSP 2011…anyone else ?

Yea but Dr. Bill still loves it. And he’s one of the app readers.

i’m applying! just curious, what other summer programs are you guys applying to?

I kind of need some advice here. When I heard about this program I absolutely loved it. However, the maximum number of summer programs I can apply to is like 3 (in order to actually do good on the applications). So I don’t want to apply if I have a really low chance and my stats are actually not that good.

Bad stats
Never took SAT or stuff like that. The only score I have is PSAT which I got a 189 on (80 on math though)…I’m not an native English speaker and didn’t study at all.
I’m Asian

My GPA is 96 unweighted, taking BC Calculus, AP Chem , and AP Stat this year. Took AP Euro last year. Took math, biology, and physics SAT II’s (did decent). My recs would probably decent and I could get a recommendation (the third one) from a physics professor at an ivy league (if that means anything). Extra curriculars: oceanography, math team, swim team, key club, shp. Doing research project at a local university (didn’t finish yet).

so basically having no test scores, besides that low 189 on PSAT, is going to bring my chances down a lot. Not sure if I should apply to this or apply to a less selective program.
