Summer Science Program (SSP) 2011

I’m double posting since the edit button is gone…sorry!

I told Mr. Bowdon I need to get in touch with my teacher before officially deciding (I’m on break right now and he’s not answering his emails) and he said I can respond as late as Monday (4/18). The more I think about it though, the more I want to do my teacher’s program, I just need to make sure it’s definitely happening. Good luck to everyone on the waitlist!

Haha, @Neon321 if your resignation (if it occurrs) contributes even in the tiniest bit to me bein accepted, I’ll throw you a part if we ever meet :D

I’ve just received the following email:

Dear Filip,

Thank you for your patience. At this point our admissions process, I can say it is unlikely that a spot in SSP will become available for you. I suggest that you make other summer plans.

We appreciate that you made a significant effort to prepare your application, which will serve you well when you apply to colleges. I have attached some general advice about college admissions which you might find helpful.

Although this outcome may be disappointing for you, we strongly encourage you to continue your scientific studies during this summer and beyond.

Best regards,
Richard Bowdon
SSP Executive Director

I got this email:

Dear BalticSea,
This is a quick update to let you know that we haven’t forgotten about you - thank you for your patience - and to say that I am requiring decisions from admitted students over the next few days. You can expect some specific guidance by email sometime next week. I will either offer you a spot in SSP or give you a pretty good idea of your chances.
Meanwhile, if you have already committed to something else, please reply and tell me so.
Best regards,
Richard Bowdon
SSP Executive Director

guess there’s still hope? sorry to hear it, fkaraz-- hope you have a fabulous summer

@neon, as you probably know, the director’s name is allan blaer. i was a little curious when i heard the java teacher’s name was blaer too. as it turns out, the java teacher is allan blaer’s son and the psych teacher is his daughter-in-law. i know his wife works at columbia too, but i’m not sure whether she does shp or not.

I know that this is probably the most naiive thing one can say, but maybe someone won’t reply him till the deadline and there will be a place for me… right, no way :stuck_out_tongue: guess I just have to live with that

I got the same email as BalticSea. Are there any other kinds of emails people have received? Has anyone on the alternate list been accepted yet?

I just got that same e-mail as well. If I’m not mistaken, there was a list of CC people accepted a few pages back, two of which were off the alternate list.

Oh well, holding on hope. At any rate I don’t think it’s /un/likely that everybody will have submitted their decisions weeks in advance of the deadline…

i think one was an int’l student (from canada in this case) and the other one was an american living abroad who was only “sort of” on the alternate list but not really?

hmmm… well how many people do you think are placed on the alternate list?

good question. if the people on this thread represent a fairly realistic cross section of applicants then it seems a like there are loads (compared to accepted and rejected). on the other hand, there are two probably more likely scenarios:

there’s a correlation between being on CC and being waitlisted if only because someone who’s waitlisted will want to get more information by visiting a site like this.

(i say this because i’ve been following a thread for another school-year program I do and have a rough idea of what it takes to get in vs. what people think it takes to get in) People on CC tend to be more motivated (they must care at least a little bit if they’re on here) and therefore are accepted/almost accepted more often on average than a random pool of people. so, rejections seem to make up a significantly smaller percentage of admissions decisions. (these kids on columbia shp thread think you need to be a genius to get in! counterexample A: me.)

i’m guessing you were probably thinking roughly the same; i just figured i’d lay it all out. in either case, it seems to be more a matter of “which came first: the chicken or the egg?”

I just wanted to let you guys know that I decided not to attend SSP this summer because of my research commitments. I e-mailed Mr. Bowdon a couple of days ago, and I’m hoping that the spot I gave up goes to one of you CCers! It was a really tough decision for me, but it’s probably for the best. Anyway, I hope those who were accepted have fun this summer (and I’m sure you will!) :)

@alyssa6: did you get any email from Mr.Bowdon saying he acknowledged your withdrawal? and when was it?

(sry for being so inquisitive, but I got my email yesterday and I wonder whether it was post- or pre- the time you withdrew)

@Fkaraz: Yes, I did get an e-mail from Mr. Bowdon saying he got my note and acknowledged my withdrawal. I got the e-mail 4 days ago on the 12th, so it was before you got your e-mail. Did you get accepted off of the wait list?

Guys in case you haven’t come yet join the FB page! We’re still missing a bunch of people. It’s for Westmont and Socorro, so just come join the group.

There are also a bunch of alumni from last year in it so you can ask some questions!

Alyssa6: I didn’t, at least yet.

Hi! I’ve been watching this discussion thread since my D applied to SSP 2011 as her first choice for the coming summer. She was very exited to be admitted yesterday off from the alternate list and will attend the NM campus. Here is the letter she received via e-mail FYI. Congratulations to all the admitted, and good luck to everybody!

"Dear …,

Congratulations! The SSP Admissions Committee has accepted your application to the 53rd annual Summer Science Program, at the NM campus.

We received 108 applications from outstanding international students around the world, and over 500 more from students in US schools, so you can be sure that your 35 SSP colleagues will be just as bright and interesting as you are. The opportunity to work closely with them - and your seven faculty - for five weeks will be an unforgettable and exhilarating experience.

Within two days of receiving this message, I ask you to do the following:

Download and read the SSP Participant Handbook , containing detailed program descriptions, travel instructions, 2010 alumni contact information, what to bring, etc.

Complete a brief online form telling us your intentions as of now: yes, no, or maybe. We don’t require a decision immediately, but by completing the form you confirm that you received this email.

If your parent wishes to apply for financial aid, download the aid application now and give it to your parent. I need it back via email or fax (to 954-862-3051) within two days. You may postpone your enrollment decision until you know the result.

I will mail to you a set of enrollment documents. If you intend to enroll, complete them together with your parent and return them as soon as possible. If you apply for financial aid, you may wait until I tell you the aid decision.

If you or your parent have any other questions, contact me immediately by phone or email. If you choose not to enroll in SSP, you must let me know as soon as possible so that we can offer admission to a student from the Alternate List.

Again, our warmest congratulations. We hope that you will join us for a fascinating, challenging, and richly rewarding summer.

Congratulations! But that makes me worried about my chances now that people have already been offered admission off the alternate list… the wait is killing me :(

uh-oh.
person, did you put a preference for one campus?

I got the same email Saturday morning (accepted off of the alternate list at NM campus) im almost 100% I’ll be attending

@TheBalticSea

I did not put a preference for one campus on the application

She put ca as her preference but did indicate she’ll go either way. Guess the ca campus is full…
