are visitors allowed to sit in on summer session classes? is the summer session representative of the regular school year in terms of classes and the students? there?

I don’t see why you wouldn’t be allowed to sit in. I do not believe classes such as humanities and the social sciences are held, which is what I always recommend for visiting students. The vast majority of students do not take summer classes, so there are fewer students. The students who do take summer classes may not be a complete representation of typical students. For example, there may be more pre-med students in summer classes, and pre-med students may not be a fair representation of all typical students. Many classes will probably have high school students on campus for the Chicago summer program. In the end, though, if you have to visit in the summer, it’s better than nothing. You can get an OK sense of how things work, it just won’t be as complete.
