Summer STEM Institute (SSI) 2020

Lets all try to keep each other updated on both the last day of payment and the start of the actual program/institute

@msresearcher12
I’m still in middle school. I have taken a semester of chemistry A/ physics A, and a year of biology (I’m on an accelerated track.) But other than that, I haven’t won any science contests or participated in something elite.

I have some writing contest awards and music awards, but that doesn’t really relate. I think, for me, it was probably my essays.

@user875634723 still waiting for their response…
but judging from this thread, and since I applied for financial aid, probably not

@msresearcher12
The ones for iresearch institute?

@msresearcher12
Also, could you let me know how to pm you on college confidential? I am puzzled on how to do that

@msresearcher12
Lemme get 15 posts first…

I also got into both Summer STEM Institute and iResearch. Now, I’m trying to decide which one to do…

@whas5up @shshsh how long did it take for you guys to hear back once you submitted your app for SSI and iResearch?

@msreacher12 I don’t have any research experience and I am a junior. I am enrolled in PLTW, am an NWCIT AiC State Winner, hold multiple of STEM-related leadership positions, have won local/regional awards (related to STEM), have worked developed and designed websites (a “business”), and am working on a project related to data science and programming. I might be forgetting something but in my essay questions, I focused on how I want to pursue a career in research and am interested in studying the intersection of biology, statistics, and computer science. Mainly, I tried to show passion and interest in STEM and research, but also revealed a personal side through the “greatest obstacle” question.

I did not apply for financial aid because I didn’t think I would qualify.

PM me if you have specific questions or want to know about my academics. (I don’t know how it works very honestly).

It may have been because of my scores? I don’t really know…

@palm12312 For iResearch, I submitted my application Tuesday night and heard back a few hours ago. For SSI, I think it took about a week or two to hear back.

@palm12312 I submitted my app on Sunday, and heard back on Wednesday. (For iResearch)

@shshsh Did they give you until the weekend to decide? (For iResearch)

@whas5up Yes, I was asked to decide by May 24th.

@shshsh Which one are you gonna do? (SSI or iresearch)

@whas5up Honestly, I have no idea yet.

@shshsh At least you got options

@shshsh see my previous post where I compared the programs. A lot of people seem to think iResearch won’t be enough time, but it has about the same hours as SSI (more hours per day but less weeks).

To me, it seems like iResearch is the more established program. Serena McCalla is very clearly amazing at what she does. SSI seems like too big of a risk at this point, and it seriously seems like the intent of the program is to earn money. They saw a need for a summer program and jumped on it which is good for them from a business standpoint. If you are interested in SSI, I don’t mean to bash the program or anything. I just think that iRI makes the most sense at this point.

^after much comparison, I agree

I know that SSI will publish our projects in their journal but does iResearch also do that?
