Summer STEM Institute (SSI) 2020

@msreacher12 that’s good to know! what type of journals is it easy for hs kids to publish in?

It doesn’t mean much if you get published in SSI’s journal (its not a “real” journal)

If getting published in a journal is easy, than it’s probably not a good journal btw. If you want to get published in a respectable journal, it’s a long process. If you want to get published in a journal that’s for profit, then it’s a short, quick expensive process. The SSI journal definitely won’t mean anything in college admission process or on a resume when applying for a lab position

Usually, if you want to get published into a respectable journal, you have to be working in a lab with a research mentor who has connections. If he/she thinks that your study is a good representation of the research they do in their lab, they will put it in the said journal with your name on it. Another way you could get published is if you’re in a prestigious summer research program like RSI, Simons, or Garcia. I think they choose the best projects to get published. That’s as far as I know; I know people in my school whose studies are shown in NCBI (idk the specific journal).

Are they letting all the people who do research in SSI publish in the SSI journal?

When did you apply, I applied two weeks ago and haven’t heard back from SSI

I applied 2 weeks ago as well, still haven’t heard back from SSI.

They said admissions are rolling, so you guys are probably going to be in the next wave. I applied on approximately May 5th, and I got my decision on May 17th. If there’s a delay, it’s probably because they’re receiving so many applicants, and they can’t decide whether to accept more.

@Hector04, I’m super late to the game for this application but I was wondering if you could give me share your essays with me or give me some insight/tips Not really sure what to write for the essays… Also opinions on listing non-stem achievements. I have national-level awards for non-stem competitions, but I’m not sure if it’s important to list them.

thx!

Sure, no problem!
I haven’t received an admission decision yet, but I’m happy to help. I tried to be spontaneous yet down-to-earth and confident in my essays, so I used Grammarly, an app that gives you free and immediate writing assistance with great insights regarding tone and grammar. That ended up helping me a lot.

I mostly wrote about my short term and long term professional goals as a physician-scientist, as well as my passion for biochemistry with an emphasis in biomedicine.
I talked about how researching keeps me up at night in a good soul-tingling kind of way, which is the reason why I applied to their summer science research program in the first place.

While my extracurriculars and science-relevant awards are average if not mediocre (remember I just finished ninth grade, which in Mexico is considered the last year of middle school), my high school merit scholarships definitely carried out my entire awards section. I also wrote an essay about that, in which I explained how I started taking responsibility for the ambitions I want to pursue abroad by working hard since age thirteen for a full ride scholarship to an International Baccalaureate school my parent’s could not afford. A couple of months ago I got the scholarship, so I’ll be able to enroll this fall, have a better shot at foreign colleges, and all that good stuff.

So that’s pretty much it.
Those were my main hooks in my application as a freshman.

Definitely add those national awards into your application, I’m sure they will appreciate seeing some none-stem stuff in a sea full of hardcore-stem applicants.

Just got accepted into the bootcamp program (no research), but honestly I think that’s for the better. I don’t know guys, I don’t have many options and I think I’m leaning towards accepting.

If it helps I submitted my app on the 11th and heard back today on the 26th. If you guys want stats I can add those too.

So what’s the general consensus on the acceptance rate? It looks like it’s somewhere from 10-20% for the bootcamp, and probably way lower for the research part. Just a guestimate, though.

Guys I got in
(first time answering with something relevant lol)
I don’t code, and i’ve never taken a computer class before. I just wrote how hard it was to move from a low-income community to a rich one, and how I’ve always wanted to be a sociology prof. I listed my bio, chem, ap calc and precalc courses and that’s it.

I forgot to apply for financial aid, so i cant attend :frowning: ask any questions? btw im a girl, rising sophomore

I can’t believe it, but I just got accepted. I forgot to apply for aid so I can’t attend. I think I might cry.

@CanadaEH7 @quwhoa
When did you guys submit your applications?

I submitted my application May 10th

@CanadaEH7 me too it’s a sad day lol

Haha I suppose there’s always next year

My cousin applied for SSI Masterclass & Bootcamp 6M course. He is confirmed with some discount.
I just wonder how is the recognition of this course. Can anyone highlight about this?

For those who applied for financial aid, how long did you wait for a response?

I submitted my application on May 11 and heard back May 26, and only got in without research. I’m still debating whether or not to go because I’m still not sure it will be worth the money, and I applied mainly because I wanted to do research. I would probably lean more towards attending if I didn’t have other summer commitments, but I don’t want to waste the money if I don’t have time

On the brighter side, going to the bootcamp would possibly allow me to start a research project on my own anyway, as I would have access to the same materials the research students do. However, I’m still not sure. Opinions?
