My daughter has been back to school exactly 1 week and today I get mail about summer storage!

Has anyone had experience with a company called Simply Storage?? Looks like they work with schools in NY-Ohio-Pa-Md-Va. I called and got ballpark info today - they bring packing supplies - boxes - bubble wrap -tape . They have pick up and delivery dates set for area schools and will deliver early for athletes. Estimate $150-250 including packing materials for the summer. My daughter does not have that much stuff - I was hoping she would share space.

Good - Bad or UGLY?? Suggestions needed please.

There is a whole thread here somewhere about lost boxes, months of not having your stuff, etc. SBMom’s idea is a much better one. Personally we are “renting” some space in my parent’s garage for DS’s stuff. …

crabbylady, I actually envy the fact that you have on paper what I’ve been trying to tell my D since Sept…that at 3000 miles away from home she’s going to have to think about summer storage…“harumph” is all I get, and “moooooomm, that’s months away!” True it is, but when you’re 3000 miles away from home, and new in an area, you’ve got to be proactive.

My kid is in the Republic of Georgia until the end of January, I hope when she gets back to school there’s a letter like the one you got. This one not from her mommy!

Anyone have any storage ideas for Western Massachussets?

My S got together with friends (four one year, five last year), shopped around and rented a regular storage space for the four months of the summer (part of May, June, July, August). Cost was about $ 70-100 dollars per kid for all that time. Of course, they had to do their own dropoffs and pickups, as well as getting boxes and packing their stuff some way. I appreciated the fact that all of them decided to save their parents a little money by not going the expensive full-service route.

We have done the summer storage thing for 3 years - we have opted for a small 5x5 storage unit - bigger than you would think - cost of about $30/month - kiddo has to do the packing and storing, etc… - but has access to it whenever she wants/needs it. We reserved it in early spring - just to be sure to have it available when it was needed Worked out GREAT for us

We are doing exactly what Jeepmom has done. We rented one last summer so we could bring things along when DS had orientation/registration last June. It worked out very well. We had no problems renting it, many were available. The 5x5s do get rented out first, but they told us that a check to reserve it in early spring is all that is necessary. They won’t charge for time that he is not actually using the unit. They just want their money in advance. I am okay with that.

But is the storage rental thing a practical idea for someone in Manhattan? My d attends Barnard and we live in Ga. She shipped some things home (turned out to be comparable in cost to the “full service” storage idea), stored a very few items in her boyfriend’s family’s basement in Connecticut, and then had to pack a lot of her clothing as she left right after school for a 6 week long performing job in PA…It was pretty much a nightmare for her to sort all of that out last Spring at Finals…

My only recourse this year is to try to take time off to go up and help her pack and then bring her things back. Any further suggestions?

churchmusicmom, I understand your problem. Are there suggestions on the school’s website? The school that my son attends has storage suggestions on their webstite. I have no idea how much storage facilities in the NY area charge, but like everything else, I would assume it is expensive.

Read all the fine print. See how much liability they have if you never see your stuff again. See what happens if they damage stuff. Don’t store anything that you can’t stand to loose. Several of these companies had huge problems last year. All of my daughter’s stuff was lost(different company). They finally found it in November after Harvard voted them off campus. Do some searches on this site and other college newspaper sites. Typically you get $50 per box or item if they loose your stuff. It’s cheaper to buy the boxes, pack it yourself, and call Fedex Ground service for a pickup. Ship it home or sell it locally.
