summer storage

I know this was covered, but I am too lazy to go find it

Anyone have any suggestions

i hear collegeboxes is kind of sketchy…

This would be for the NYC area

Look for any storage place nearby. Most have everything from closets to garage size stalls for rent. My D&S usually got a 6x5 closet and shared the cost with a couple others (around $30 a month/$10 a head) the ceilings are usually between 8-10 feet high and you stack boxed stuff as high as it will go.

My son worked for collegeboxes last fall unloading and delivering and it seemed to work fine. No complaints from anyone at his school.

good to hear!!!

thanks!!!

I had just heard some bad stories, but that can happen with any company, so wanted some reassurance I guess

my d needs to move her stuff out for 10 days then back in///rediculouse

qand yes I am calling housing and whining…but nicely :)

We had some confusion/problems with collegeboxes, but this was at Tulane the first term back after Katrina, so may be understandable/forgivable for that reason. They stored things instead of shipping them home, which is what we had wanted/intended.

When we realized the stuff was not arriving home, we started working with them. It was very slow (largely, I think, because they had trouble contacting the storage warehouse in New Orleans - again, understandable). Although it was slow to resolve, the stuff eventually arrived home - very eventually; but they were always courteous, seemed to work hard to resolve things and, in the end, gave us a reasonable refund. I think I knew all the staff on a first name basis by the time we were done.

I tell this story, because I think there is a moral: I assumed that upon clicking the right buttons online, I had arranged for shipment to home, not storage. DS assumed that the stuff was heading home, not into storage. I believe the onsite reps (kids) at his school on moving day never double checked/asked questions about what he/we intended. They assumed we knew what we were doing. (I think DS needed to ask for a specific type of label for ship (not store) and/or check a different box on the contract he signed).

So, the website was a tad confusing and we assumed too much. I think if you are more careful than we were and make sure your D double checks everything at move-out time, they could be fine.

(I know someone else here had a bad experience and there was a long thread about that; probably with collegeboxes in the title).

I keep reading bad reports about them, like from Columbia whose students wanted a new company

sigh…i don’t think its the people that work there, but a bad “system” and organizational program

^^ Could well be true. The thing is, it’s so nicely designed convenience-wise. They show up on campus on move-out day, near the dorms… So great if parents are not driving to pick up the kid.

What a shame to have to go through all that for a l0-day storage experience.

Here is a different idea: does your D have any school friends whose families live in the suburbs around NYC, or in the boroughs? See if they’d accept a small cash gift to let her put her boxes in their home for l0 days. They might even decline the gift.

With the money saved from all-summer storage, she can perhaps get a uhaul rental to share with the roommate from that home, and they’d share a move together.

we are working on that…at first D was told she could leave her stuff, then the story changed

I am going right to the top on monday, seems all in some sort of conference…

They told her, well, jsut take it home and bring it back…um not so easy coast to coast

If it is only a 10-day period, I really think paying3’s thought is the way to go. Everyone returning student at the school has to do this?

yeah, that is what we are working on, it just came up today, D had been told she would just have to move her stuff from one room to another…misinformed as it were…so we are scrambling a bit

we are hoping to work out the days

the rub is she is a bridesmaid in a wedding Ireland, and has to finagle all this before and after her trip…maybe I will have to go and "help’

darn 3 days in nyc…what to do?

DS went in with 5 other kids and rented a storage unit last summer. It was dry and airconditioned (NC summer) and it worked out very well. Not expensive, either, especially divided 6 ways.

our issue is getting it all to the unit, but we can just order a large van-cab thing or something

D is asking around on her end!!!

such funness

My recollection is that collegeboxes charges a VERY high price per box.
It would be much much cheaper to use a storage facility, that’s assuming you can get the stuff to it. S (Tulane) has used Public Storage for the summer in New Orleans, and D used Puiblic Storage in Texas when she was gone for several months for a study abroad. We’ve had very good experiences both times. You can also purchase boxes from them if necessary.
However, if you’re moving your own stuff and already have something to put it all in, you wouldn’t need that.

I’d definitely check on those prices…maybe I’m crazy but I’m remembering a very high price. I think it was because they charge PER BOX, but not for the time it’s stored. So, if you need to store stuff for several months (ie like a study abroad) might not be a bad deal. But a per box price that ran up to $50 could be a killer if you have lots of boxes.

CGM, if I understand your situation correctly, my d had a similar one last year, also in NYC. She had to get all her stuff out of her dorm for a couple of weeks and then move back in to another on-campus residence for a summer internship (she attends Barnard and her summer internship was a Columbia one). Then move her stuff back out for a couple of weeks before school began in the fall.

College Boxes was not an option because they pick the stuff up at the end of the spring semester and store it for the entire summer (or ship home). You cannot get to your stuff during the summer.

Our solution, and it worked well, was to rent a storage unit near her campus for the entire summer. We stored stuff she would not need in the back of the unit (winter clothing, some of her suitemates’ stuff, some kitchen stuff, etc), and stuff she needed for summer in the front and therefore more accessible.

We would have used taxis if necessary to move the stuff in, but fortunately a friend has a car in the city and came and helped her move. It took three trips, I believe.

Good luck with this!

Coincidentally, I was just working on our little storage problem this a.m. Normally, my husband and I drive up to Chapel Hill and help ldgirl move her things into a little locally owned storage facility near the campus. We make the drive because she doesn’t have a car, we enjoy visiting Chapel Hill (even during dorm move-out), and because we need to prepare her Vespa for storage (tune-up, fuel additives, etc…) This year, can’t do it. DH is out of the country and our son has battery tryouts. Both sets of grandparents are in various stages of recuperation from major illness so they cannot help out. She will have to fly home with what she can fit in two suitcases.

I’ve spent a week on the phone trying to find someone to move her belongings and was getting a little desperate. Finally, the owner of the storage place took pity on us and agree to move her belongings in his truck. The only trick will be prepping the Vespa…but high time she learns to do it herself. A little mechanical know-how never hurt anyone.

Altogether we are paying $75 a month for a 5x10 unit and $65 for the mover. Flights are always free for us due to the bazillion frequent flyer miles dh has racked up. Excellent deal all around.

We’ve used Manhattan Mini-Storage several times, and it’s always worked out well. They have monthly rates but many convenient locations.
Yes, Manhattan Mini-Storage is what we used and were also pleased.

We used CollegeBoxes last summer and we were very happy with the service. They picked up in May and delivered to the new dorm room in the fall. I’m doing it again this summer.
