D has an internship in Chicago this summer. Was going to room with a fellow student who also has an internship in Chicago, but due to an illness in the family the potential roommate has decided not to continue with the internship. Her other friends with internships in Chicago have found housing that would mean over an hour commute to work. D would like to be closer.

D will not have a car and needs to rely on public transportation. Would prefer furnished but we could come up with some minimal furnishings if necessary. Internship is June 1 - August 5. Internship is unpaid, but her school provides approximately $3K to cover living expenses for the internship.

Internship is near North Park University and Northeastern Illinois University.

She’s been responding to postings on craigslist but hasn’t found anything yet. One looked perfect but had already been filled.

Thought I’d post here just in case someone can be of assistance. I’m always amazed at the connections and knowledge of the CC family!

I can’t give you any specific advice, but public transportation, by bus or train, is very good. Look carefully at a CTA map and see what bus lines or preferably train lines her work is near. You don’t want to have to change from a train to bus, or take two buses. But she can look at all neighborhoods on the north side that are within walking distance of the train or bus that gets close to her work. Here future employer can probably help with that. That will open up many neighborhoods. My son got a sublet quite easily from Craig’s list last summer, but he was working downtown and had a lot of neighborhoods with easy transportation to downtown. The location you mentioned is pretty far north (but a nice area). Figure out the neighborhoods and then find the sublet. Good luck.

Anything in the North Park neighborhood would be within walking distance of her internship. More apartments are available in the Ravenswood area, conveniently surrounding the Brown Line CTA trains which would give access to the area where she’s working as well as to popular North Side attractions and downtown. These are pretty nice areas and relatively affordable. Closer to the lakefront and closer to downtown gets much more expensive. Besides craigslist, there’s a local free weekly in Chicago called the Reader which has lots of apartment listings, including sublets; I believe you can access their classifieds online. I’ve also seen some summer sublets offered on e-bay.

VRBO www.vrbocom has rentals in Chicago. Many of us use VRBO for trips to Europe, but we forget that Europeans use VRBO for trips here! Look for some of their monthly listings
