<p>For those with students traveling this summer, just wondering what you’re thinking regarding the current health concern of swine flu. I know it’s too early to know or to make any decisions but I’ve been thinking about it and just wondering what your thoughts are.

<p>Yep. I’m already worried about my son traveling out-of-state over the summer. Glad to hear I’m not the only one with this on their mind.</p>
<p>My S is doing an short internship at the end of the summer in Germany. My family and I are flying to NY next month and Texas this summer. I am not worried. I am a big hand washer anyway. </p>
<p>There are so many more illnesses any of us could pick up.</p>

<p>My son is supposed to fly from IA to VT, VT to Serbia and back and then to Morocco. Of course we know worrying does no good.</p>
<p>We were in HKG and China during the SARS epdemic. We walked through HKG airport with hardly anyone in sight. It was also the week we attacked Iraq. Landing at EWR was the best feeling, I could have kissed the ground when we got off the plane.</p>
<p>We were in London during all the bombing. I was traveling by myself with our Ds when we had to evacuate Heathrow due to a bomb scare.</p>
<p>I think I would all necessary precautions, but I wouldn’t let it stop me from traveling. Our D1 is going to Australia for a semester and we are traveling with her on the way out. Our D2 will be in CA for a month this summer for a ballet intensive. I am not going to cancel anything.</p>
<p>We are off to Scotland, wouldn’t you know it that was the first case in Great Britain!</p>

<p>My S is doing more travel this summer than I generally do in an entire year. He’s flying from LA to HNL, back to LA, to VA, back to LA, to China, back to LA, to VA & finally, back to LA, all between May & August. I’m hoping he doesn’t wear himself out but we’re not cancelling anything. I’m flying a bit as well–to another island, San Diego & DC. Don’t know anyone who has cut back on their travel now because of the swine flu, but then I don’t know folks who were planning to go to Mexico and South America.</p>
<p>The American Thoracic Society will be meeting in San Diego next month & have added a special presentation (or more) on the swine flu & similar topics. I plan to learn as much as I can about it to share with those back in Hawaii.</p>

There has been some outbreaks of Dengue Fever in the areas where D is traveling ( although they have also found it in Florida)
At least the box including hand wipes finally reached her.</p>
<p>Not my kids, but my 80 yr old mother and her husband left Monday for a long awaited cruise to Mexico. Apparently, it is being diverted and going to Catalina and San Diego (for an 11 day cruise?). Have not heard from them but I am sure they are not happy.</p>
<p>My D is flying on Friday morning. She actually was sick when she flew out to Ca last week. The night she arrived she had a 103 + fever. I feel for her seatmates. I have some concerns about her flying back. She will travel through LAX and Houston. Both airports that see quite a number of passengers coming to and fro from Mexico. I am reminding her to wash her hands and keep them away from her face.</p>

<p>Yes, this. I already fly like a budding Howard Hughes, so I feel okay. </p>
<p>I also must admit to bit of ignorance on the swine flu, so perhaps that is helping me? 30K people a year in the US die from the flu, not to mention illnesses that a person can pick up traveling. We are all relatively healthy and can get to a hospital in under ten minutes. Of course, I would never want to pass it onto someone who is very young, elder or immune compromised, but isn’t that true of all of these bugs?</p>
<p>Heck, I’m worried about H, who’s on sabbatical in China.</p>
<p>We are going to Punta de Mita, near Puerta Vallarta in June. Not cancelling anything. Much of the illness in Mexico is concentrated in Mexico City. Many areas of Mexico City do not have adequate water supply thus hygiene and things like washing hands is not terrific.<br>
I was curious to see that the cruise ships have cancelled Mexico ports. Areas like Mazatlan, Puerta Vallarta where they normal dock have not had problems with either swine flu or the drug cartels.</p>
<p>During the avian flu scare a couple years ago my family and I took a daytrip down to the city. No problems getting a seat at the restaurant of your choice and my kids got some fantastic deals in Chinatown – absolutely no one out and about. I’m not suggesting that people take this swine flu situation likely, but if it appears after considerable thought and weighing of the evidence that most folks are overreacting, a flu scare may present a great travel bargain.</p>
<p>I’m not worried about my son travelling. I’m worried that he might be prevented from travelling.</p>
<p>S has plans to travel, starting the beginning of June, throughout the Balkans to some fairly remote places. He is so excited to go, but I am getting increasingly concerned about the quality of medical care he would get (or, more accurately, not get) if he did get sick while there, especially in view of WHO’s just upgrading matters to Level 5, where a pandemic is considered imminent. Ugh…</p>
<p>I’m thinking I’d see if his travel doc would give him a supply of Tamiflu to take to Serbia, just in case. And then to Morocco, if the flu is still a problem.</p>
<p>DD is leaving for Summer Session Abroad (France) on Monday. She got an email from the head of the dept. saying that they shouldn’t worry, they are moving away from the flu.
She will take airborne to try to boost immunity on the flight. I will worry…but that is what I do.</p>
<p>Bethie…I read with interest that your son will be in Morocco. My D has a summer job in her field in the French Alps. When it ends, she is traveling to Morocco to visit a friend in the Peace Corps. I wonder if she’ll be there when your son is (this will likely be early August.) But hey, she recently traveled throughout Cambodia and Laos which required all sorts of medication, such as for malaria. I really have not thought at all about a problem with regard to her working in France.</p>
