Should I join The National Society of High School Scholars?

The National Society of High School Scholars is not a big deal. Don’t join it. You have to pay $60 and I think you get a directory of scholarships or are entered in one of theirs or something? If you join, you can pay extra to get a sweatshirt or coffee mug, though.

People to People Ambassadors is a legitimate program but they try to make themselves seem more exclusive then they actually are by mailing out nominations and having special meetings. One of my friends just called them last year and signed up. No one gets rejected from it. They have nice trips around the world but don’t go to it only because you think it’s impressive. It’s not.

So none of these will look good in my application?

Not particularly. In general, if you have to pay a lot to go to it, it’s not impressive on a college App. I guess they’re better then wasting a summer though.

Like I said, volunteering, taking community college classes, researching, getting a job, etc. will look much better than attending a $6,000 summer program.

ca87…when you say research…what do you mean…i am looking for math/science research…cuz i want to apply to mit next year, and would like to do it…but i e-mailed the professors at my local college.and they did not have any things for me…so what should i do now??
if i did independent stuff, what would i do it on??

A lot of my friends do science research at a university but that’s not working for you. Did you email or call or go to the school itself? I would suggest going to the science area of the college and talking to who is in charge. Most people who are teachers are passionate about what they’re teaching and want young people to be involved, so just ask if you could be involved in any way.
