The creamery at the top of our town lake does serve Gifford’s. Every summer, DH eats through the entire list–more than 20 flavors, blueberry and peppermint are his favs. It takes a lot to convince me not to order mint chocolate chip, but I must say I like Toasted Coconut and Moose Tracks.
One summer in the early aughts, lobster was $2.99/lb and my cousin, who lived in Bangor, treated us to all-you-can-eat at her house and then took us to Bar Harbor for lobster ice cream. I have to admit, I was more “Let Mikey try it,” but that one bite was amazing. It tasted like an uber buttery butter pecan. I ordered a double. I haven’t had it since, but still dream about it. Maybe this summer…
We will be spending a lot of time on our recently rebuilt deck! The deck is our backyard of sorts (the rest of the lot is covered with swampy forest). The fire table I got for Mr.’s big birthday a few years ago will definitely get a lot of use. The deck also is where I grow my container garden.
That looks great, @garland. We have a small one that we keep in the car with the picnic backpack for spontaneous outings, like trips to Five Islands Lobster Co. where we order lobsters right off the boat and enjoy them on picnic tables on the wharf.
OK, I guess THAT’S what I’m looking forward to. Man, I love Maine.
I live in a climate where I can and do spend a good amount of time outside all year. My dog and I walk/hike hundreds of miles during every month of the year. One aspect that has changed with the warmer weather are the specific locations we go. We went to Mount Laguna area for the final time until the fall last week. Once the mountain snow gets a bit lower, we will instead head to Idyllwild / Mount San Jacinto, Big Bear, and John Muir Wilderness.
My dog is more sensitive to heat than most dogs, which I find surprising, given her thin coat and slender build. The temp reached 70F today, which is too hot for her usual level of activity. We will start heading to the athletic fields to run with other dogs later, near sunset.
I live in Brooklyn, near the Verrazzano Bridge, in an apartment with no outdoor space. But just a few yards outside my building is Shore Road that runs along the ridge that my neighborhood is named for. There’s a park leading down to the water, with a parkway (limited access, no trucks) (that will surely disappear eventually due to climate change), and the harbor beyond, with views of Staten Island and Manhattan. Meanwhile I have enjoyed observing the spring plantings of my neighbors in one- and two-family houses, and the weekly Greenmarket where I bought beautiful baby bok choy last Saturday, saving me a trip to one of the many Chinatowns in NYC. It almost never gets hot enough to turn on the air conditioners. What with many windows, and a few really good fans, nature usually cools my apartment.
We had a beautiful spring, but the weather is definitely turning to summer weather where I live. I think it was 76 degrees this morning with highs in the low 90s expected later today. We’ve already have some feels-like temps above 100.
So, my big summer plan (while at home) is to start using the rower that we bought this spring. The spring’s weather was so gorgeous that there were more outdoor walks, but it’s definitely getting to be the time of year to maximize all a/c options.
When we relocate, I’d love to relocate to an area with great summer weather.
I’m still waiting for enough sunny days in a row so that I only need to heat the pool once for the season. Likely I’ll get impatient to get in the water by Memorial Day - May Grey is really a thing (we’re exactly one mile from the coast).
I did take a lovely beach walk after PT this morning (the office is one block from the beach).
I love living in southern Maine. Our lot is in the woods on the river, there are farms in our community, and we’re not even three miles from the ocean. We can be at a great ski resort in an hour and a half. And we can always go to Boston if we want the big city. But don’t tell anyone!
I like to grill and have beautiful dinners in my patio.
I think Garland and I established a few years ago that we are from the same area - near the ocean but also the bay. The ocean beaches get so crowded - my favorite thing is to slide into the beautiful, not packed bay beach with a little cooler of snacks, maybe a wine spritzer, and my book. Not sure about the spritzer this summer as I don’t enjoy alcohol that much lately.
I’m in NJ and my bay beach also has great hiking/walking trails and dogs are allowed!
