Do you use a foundation with spf?
I also use the Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration for the face, but Neutrogena for everything else.
Agree the banana boat dry does have a fragrance. But it’s not bad. I like it so much I don’t care. I d like to try the Australia gold sometime.
I have been using this Australian Gold https://www.ulta.com/botanical-spf-50-tinted-face-lotion?productId=xlsImpprod15721087 as recommended by Angie on Hot and Flashy. I like it alot. The tint is very mild, it is fragrance free and it doesn’t feel like sunscreen at all.
I have very fair skin and live in FL so I’ve tried quite a few. This is my favorite

My aesthetician recommended it and uses it herself. I bought my first bottle from her but have since ordered from Amazon. It’s more expensive than drug store brands but lasts a long time. It doesn’t take much to completely cover my face and I’ve not have any issues with only applying once a day under my makeup for normal day activities.
It is very lightweight and absorbs immediately. I hate the feeling of sunscreen and I can’t even tell this is on. It’s not labeled fragrance free but I can’t smell anything.
I actually use moisturizer, foundation and powder - all with SPF 30-50 - on my face. I use the SkinCeuticals on my body. Because I won’t even go outside the door without sunscreen, I use it on every body surface that could possibly see the sun, every day that I venture outdoors (which, sadly, is not during the week … until that wonderful day when I retire someday!).
Kiehl’s moisturizers generally are SPF 30 but not all, so look closely.
@dwhite (& others) - does the Australian Gold wipe off?
I prefer Neutrogena Ultra Sheer (spf as high as possible), which I use on my arms & back of my hands. However, I believe when I drive & lean my left arm on the door by the base of the window my arm “paints” the door white… I also have this issue with other mineral-base sun blocks, e.g. those with a lot of zinc oxide.
I highly recommend Kiehl’s Super Fluid UV Defense Sunscreen (spf 50+), which I use on my face. No scent. Very light consistency.
Another vote for SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF 50. It also comes in an untinted version.
I used Skinceuticals physical fusion UV defense for years and recently switched to Australia Gold (less expensive and, somehow, just wanted a change after years using the same thing) and am very happy with it. It does appear tinted but doesn’t go on tinted for me and definitely goes on dry. I also really dislike the greasy feeling some sunscreens have and was thrilled when I first found skinceuticals.
In addition, my foundation has SPF 30 in it.
I use sunscreen religiously on my face but am not that good about it on the rest of my body unless I’m headed to the beach. Maybe I’ll try the banana boat recommended here.
@collage1 , if you do buy the banana boat, will you tell me how it compares to the Australian gold on the face. What it feels like when it’s first put on, one minute? Any shine factor? Which you like better?
Ok Peeps, I channeled Angie from HotandFlashy and did a side by side comparison this morning between Neutrogena ultra touch dry to Banana Boat Drytouch Matte.
We use tons of sunscreen all summer. My go to for my face was the Neutrogena, and it’s very good…the best that I previously was able to find. We used bigger cheaper bottles on our bodies. No Ad was a good one if I could find it.
Anyway, one day last summer we ran out of body sunscreen and I went to CVS. BB Drytouch was new, so I bought it. As Angie say, “Oh My Gawd”. We were thrilled. So I tried it on my face and now that’s the only thing we use, I still have A few bottles of Neutrogena left.
Ok…so I put each on half of my face and also each on my forearms.
- There is a scent to both. As I’m smelling my forearms, the Neutrogena is actually stronger. They are both extremely mild, though and both smell good. I have to put my nose right up to my arm.
- They are both great sunscreens, but the Banana Boat goes on drier. Within one minute, 5 minutes and 10 minutes, it really is drier feeling. It’s been 15 minutes and the Neutrogena side still has a slightly creamy feel, not greasy, on both my face and forearm. I don’t have that feeling with the Banana Boat.
- When I applied the Neutrogena, it goes on white and I have to rub a bit harder and longer than the BB.
In my opinion, BBis a better product. Not tons and tons, but I really like the matte feel better than the slightly creamy.
Just pick up a bottle next time you’re getting sunscreen, it’s not that much. Worth a try, right?
I worry every time I try a new sunscreen when I am actually going to be in the sun for any length of time. As someone who burns extremely easily, I have been “burned” by supposedly good sunscreens that do not protect me. My mom was a nurse and always made me wear sunscreen … but for so many years, they only provided very minimal protection. I burned too many times. In college, I went to Florida for the first time. I wore the best sunscreen at the time & burned in record time. I went to Bermuda in 1983 for my honeymoon & burned during my 15 minute wait to check in … I was wearing the best sunscreen you could get. Fast forward to the mid-late 90’s when my parents moved to Florida. I was able to go outside for more than 30 seconds because sunscreen had advanced so much. Just the same, I worry every time I try a new one!
I really like the sun screen products in the Image skincare line and use PREVENTION+daily ultimate protection moisturizer SPF50. There is also a sun screen that is tinted. Image isn’t greasy and works well. My dermatologist recommended it.
I’ve tried several Image SpF moisturizer. My esthetician recommends them to her clients. It is one of several brands she sells and uses along with Skinceuticals and Obaji lines.
My two favorite skin products are by Image skincare. I use the Image Vit C serum daily. I also love the Image Vital C hydrating repair creme. @Bromfield2 I highly recommend both those products.
For the rest of my body if I’m going to the beach I like the broad spectrum Hawaiian Tropic. It has a nice scent but it’s not overwhelming. It also doesn’t stain my clothes. I can’t stand the spray can sunscreens. The scents give me a headache and I find that some brands stain. My H and son are really happy with the sprays.
Regarding the dry touch Neutrogena- my D loves that one for her horse and herself. He gets a bit of sunburn on his face so she puts sunscreen on him in certain spots.
Alba Botanical also makes a nice sunscreen and lots of other nice products. You can find some of their products in the drugstore more frequently now but they also sold at Whole Foods
Skin cancer runs in my family. My oldest son, a strawberry blonde with very fair skin and blue eyes, is a mailman. He carries spray on Banana Boat 45 in his bag and a spare in the car. When he first began walking a route 2 years ago, he didn’t listen to me and came home burned on the first really sunny day. He listened to me after that about the sunscreen. He likes the BB but his concerns are not the same as what a woman might have.
I confess that I don’t use sunscreen but, then again, I don’t spend more than 30 minutes outdoors at a time or, more accurately, out of the shade. I need to be in the sun because my Vitamin D levels are woefully deficient.
I have used Neutrogena but didn’t like the smell.
My husband likes the Australian Gold because it isn’t greasy and does not have a noticeable scent. He has to use something on his face, hands and arms. I have grabbed it in a pinch and it is not greasy. I use a clarins product on my face typically and Neutrogena on my body.
Doea anyone have a recommendation for waterproof sunscreen?
If it just needs to be regular waterproof, I like the Coola Mineral Face SPF 30 Matte Cucumber. It doesn’t feel greasy and it’s one of the few that doesn’t make me break out or sting my eyes. Works fine for 2 hours if I’m sweating or briefly swimming.
For days when I’m in the water or being splashed most of the time, the MDSolarSciences Mineral Tinted Creme SPF 30 Broad Spectrum sunscreen is the go-to. It’s thicker than the Coola and doesn’t dry quite as matte, but it is very, very waterproof.
I’m lucky enough to get to race sailboats 2-3 days a week in Florida and I have the complexion of a redhead, so good sunscreen is important. If I don’t wear sunscreen, I burn in about 10 minutes. But both the Coola and MDSolarSciences work well. My dermatologist is always surprised how good my skin looks for how much sun/saltwater exposure I get, so she says keep doing whatever I’m doing.
BTW, I only use that expensive stuff on my face and neck. For the rest of my body, the Walmart Sport Lotion works well and is waterproof.
