We will be driving to Maryland and would like to spend Sunday in NYC. I’m planning to arrive in time to snag something good at the TKTS booth for 3pm but will have 4 hours to kill. Any suggestions?

What are you interested in doing? You could check out this thread from a few days ago, which talks about spending a few hours around central park. I think that excursion is happening today, actually:

In The Heights. Wicked. Spring Awakenings. If you get to NYC around 11:30Am you can go to the theatre where Wicked is playing at get tickets by lottery for 25.00 Drawing is at 12 noon. Each drawing gives out 2 tickets per person. Need ID. Madam Tousades Wax Museum. Mars 2112 themed restaurant. Planet Hollywood Restaurant. Bubba Gump Shrimp Restaurant. These are all around Times Square/Broadway district. Easy walk. Can also get the double decker bus tour, pick up right in Times Square. Fun…Fun…
BTW, you can also go directly to the theatres and see what discounts they have directly. a good website for discounts is:

Usually Spring Awakening and Wicked do not have Sunday night performances.

I very much doubt that In The Heights would be available at TKTS right now…it just won the Tony.

Not all musicals have a Sunday night show. Some that do are: Avenue Q, Chorus Line, Legally Blond, Mamma Mia, RENT, Spamalot, Grease, Chicago. Many of these may be at TKTS in fact.

I’ll be in NYC on Sunday myself.

We were at TKTS 2 weeks ago and all those musicals had tickets. DD would be happy with any of these. We’ve done the bus tour and Madame Tussauds. Was wondering if there was something else in the Times Square area that might be a little off the beaten track but would be open on a Sunday.

Not in Times Square area – further south in Union Square. Max Brenner’s is an amazing chocolate emporium with a perpetual chocolate fountain. It’s true my D is a chocolate hound, but it’s her favorite place south of the park.

There’s always a quick trip to MET or Museum of Natural History. Natural History is on West Side, like Broadway, but in the 80’s. Or there’s just hanging around Lincoln Center. Then there’s also the Time-Warner Building at Columbus Circle (B’way, 7th, and 58th Street). There’s a Border’s (or Barnes and Noble I forget) that we hang out in. It’s something to be seen and there are a lot of interesting stores.

Thank you all so much! We were considering doing one of the duck tours. Does it make sense to buy tickets online or is the price the same when you get there? Also, since we will be heading south, it seems silly to park in CT take the train and then drive through NY when we’re done. I figure it will cost at least $60 with the parking and train tickets. Can anyone recommend somewhere to park in the TS area? I figure it won’t be an horrendous drive since it is a Sunday…

Spring Awakening does usually have a 7 PM show on Sunday nights but not in summer. Wicked only has a 3 PM show. I would not count on getting rush tickets at either of those on a summer weekend, though. There are usually hundreds of people trying for a limited number of seats, and SA now also has virtual rush so the demand is even higher. TKTS is the better bet, though you aren’t likely to get tickets there for Wicked. They still run at around 100% attendance and don’t need to use TKTS. Same with In The Heights, hasn’t been on since prior to the Tonys. SA is almost always there. Here’s a list of last week’s availablity which will give you an idea of what you’re likely to find:

Of those, the ones I’d recommend and where Sunday evening shows are available would be Rent, A Chorus Line (6:30), Avenue Q, and I would have recommended Legally Blonde prior to Laura Bell Bundy leaving.

The bus tours are good but would take you much more than four hours to be really worth the cost. They’re more for someone who has an entire day to devote to it, and who can get on and off the bus to explore. I’d get my theatre tickets, then walk up to Central Park, maybe visit the zoo there, stop at the zoo cafe for a cold drink, then head south along Fifth Avenue, drop into FAO Schwartz and then window shop back to 47th, turn right and walk through the Rockefeller Center area, back to Times Square for a bite to eat at the Roxy Deli then off to your show.

There are a couple of parking lots on 44th St. between 8th and 9th Ave. There’s also one on 43rd St. between Broadway and 8th Ave. Have fun!

Sorry, when I said that Spring Awakening doesn’t usually have a show on Sunday nights…I meant right now. It so happens that just this past Sunday, D1 called me from NYC and had a friend in town who was going to head to TKTS to get Sunday night tickets and I had seen that SA isn’t showing on Sunday nights. I forgot that during the year, they did have Sunday night performances.

The best parking we’ve found is on 42nd Street right across from the exit of the Lincoln Tunnel. Cheapest and right where you want to be.

I second Chedva’s parking suggestion–really convenient, very large so should have spots available early in the day, and then when you leave easy access to the Lincoln Tunnel. (If you are seeing a 3 p.m. show you will have time for a nice lunch–have you ever been to Becco? Very pleasant.)

You could easily hop into a taxi and go spend a few hours walking around Soho, Chinatown, or the Lower East Side, or Greenwich Village. To me, that’s one of the most fun things to do in New York.

billsbillsbills, we are native to the area and this is the web site we always use when we are going to park in the city. It’s easy to use and will tell you the price and location of all the area parking.

You can do almost as well on ticket prices via sites like broadwaybox, which give you discount codes to use at ticketmaster or at the box office. No need to wait in line at TKTS, and you might get better location for the same money. Are you going to the Times Square TKTS or the South Street Seaport one? And are you planning on going to the TKTS at 3? That’s when the Times Square one closes, and it’s late in the day for the seaport, so that might limit your ticket choice, too. Unless you meant a matinee at 3 PM?
