I’m acutely going to be transferring from a community college so I’m not sure if I should of put this in transferring (sorry if this is the wrong thread for this question) I have been accepted into both schools and I cannot decide which school would be best for transferring. I’m in my early/mid 20s not sure if that really matters and I will be going for history. Are there any pros and cons to going to either of these schools? Which one do you guys think would be the better choice.
Is one of them cheaper for you?
Do you want to study history to teach or to prepare for Law school or to do research in a graduate program?
Did you get into the Honors College or Departmental Honors at either of those?
I live in NY so both of them are pretty much the same price. I do not plan on teaching or going to law school, I have been considering graduate school to be my next venture after I get my BA. I didn’t get into any of the honor programs in either.
before you think about grad school, think about your ability to get into the honors program and write a thesis in history at either one. What languages do you speak?
(a pretty good knowledge of one or two foreign languages would be expected)
What internships have you had already, and what internships does each college offer? What about career placement at each college?
If grad school doesnt pan out, what do you plan on doing?
Honestly I haven’t thought much about what I would do after beyond look for jobs and have a better chance in some areas. All of the jobs I have had have nothing to do with history. I don’t know how to speak any other language.
I would probably choose Albany. I think it has a somewhat better reputation, it is one of the four research universities in the SUNY system . and it is near Albany, a decent sized city in case you want to ever get away from campus for a bit.
Yeah I’ve visited the city a few times, it is a pretty fun area. I did not know about it being one of the research universities though.
Plattsburgh is a laid back city and the school is underrated. You will be fine as a History major. One of Plattsburgh’s specialties is the History of Canada. It’s neat that the Canadian border and fascinating cities such as Montreal are relatively nearby. You will get a fine liberal arts education at SUNY Plattsburgh, if you are motivated.
I do really enjoy Canada I’ve been to Toronto a few times although I’ve never been to Montreal and I hear they are worlds apart. Admittedly I don’t know much Canadian History. Would you say that Plattsburgh has a better history program than Albany?
