SUNY Albany Shooting

<p>A 22-year old U of Albany student is clinging to life after being shot in the head while walking in a neighborhood heavily populated by students from the university and the College of St. Rose. The story is here:</p>

<p>This neighborhood has had more problems than the newspaper story implies. The Albany Times-Union highlighted the area in a feature story it ran a couple months back that essentially pointed out that on-campus crime stats don’t always tell the full story about student crime and safety. The SUNY Albany campus itself is pretty safe statistically. Many students live in university-owned housing and apartments a couple miles east of the main campus, however. This area – where the student was shot last night – is a mix of residences, small businesses and bars that cater to the Albany/St. Rose student population. Crime stats, for robbery, disorderly conduct and underrage drinking, are fairly high in this area. Shootings, on the other hand, haven’t been that common.</p>
