Just an observation on my part from what I’ve heard in the past and have already seen here- most SUNY schools do though
My dtr has already received generous merit from oos schools which in some cases make them cheaper than Bing( and much nicer weather)!
That makes sense because OOS tuition is a lot more expensive. But it is not reasonable since the award is merit-based scholarship. My understanding is that merit should not discriminate where are you coming from. So instate students who scored much higher academically does not deserve the same merit.
it may not be “reasonable” from the individual student/parent perspective but it is from their institutional perspective. my understanding is that Binghamton has a harder time attracting OOS students for whatever reason (eg. not perceived as “prestigious” as other flagship state schools, location, etc.) so their institutional priority is to increase OOS enrollment and attract talent especially from neighboring states like NJ, CT, MA, PA, etc. they need to compete with other flagship schools that have big sports programs or brand cache and they have limited merit resources to dole out. not necessarily “fair” but that’s reality.
Do folks know if admissions is closed next week for example should we should not expect anything next week? Or are aware of any other days they are closed?
Most administrative offices at schools will be closed 12/25-1/2.
Haha, we may truly hear something by January 15
Yes now their page says
The Admissions office will be closed December 25 through January 1.
I asked because I work at a college and we don’t close.
And hopefully we get an answer that is not deferred to RD
It would be a nice Christmas present to hear this week
No change at portal
No noises here, not even a mouse
Crickets here.
We are still waiting as well. I’m son applied in September and we are in state.
After getting the award, have you been able to see it on the financial aid tab of my.binghamton.edu? (same login as portal)
When I click on the tab it just never connects.
Thanks!
I don’t know, I’ve not been in the portal. Every notification (decision + merit) has come via email
Both the acceptance and then the merit first came in an email and then in the regular mail soon after.
Thank you! My daughter isn’t always the best at checking email so I was wondering if there was a back-up method of delivering merit info.
Hello! My son applied 10/16 (first day of the free application week). He would like to attend Watson for mechanical engineering. We are in-state. I see a lot of people with amazing stats in this forum. He is a a 1440 SAT (780 math), 32 ACT (35 math) and 95% unweighted average. 3 sport varsity athlete since sophomore year and NHS, awards, etc… I thought he was pretty solid, but after reading some of these posts, I guess he’s a “average good student”…
He is starting to get a little anxious since he hasn’t heard from a single college and other kids from school are being accepted. He also hasn’t been rejected. Binghamton is a favorite. His friend (very high stats) was accepted recently into Binghamton’s bioengineering. Also waiting on Buffalo’s honors program.
Good luck to everyone!
Good luck! It sounds like he has great stats. I think these forums are a bit skewed towards the above average student (and parents of those kids), so I would not worry about that. Fingers crossed you hear this week. My daughter applied 10/15 and we just found out last week. (Harpur)
Thanks. This is my oldest kiddo.
As a parent, I guess I will have him apply to a couple more safeties during winter break. We were really hoping the EAs would be back before January 1st, so he could relax a bit!! He’s applied to 10 engineering schools, but some are RD and it seems like the EAs are coming back after January 1st.
