Hi. I’m a high school senior this year and I’ve been looking into several colleges. I’ve really been looking into the suny schools and my top choices/dream schools are UBuffalo and UAlbany. My grades freshman and sophomore year were not the best (like 60s and 70s) but I sort of pulled it together my junior year bringing my GPA up to an 80. I’m also taking 3 college level classes senior year (journalism, psychology, and sociology) and I took a college pre-algebra class my junior year. As for extra curriculars I had a part time job this year for a year and was involved in key club for a year. I also tried to do track 2 yrs but got cut both times lol.
I plan to major in Communications and Psychology and my top choices are Albany and Buffulo but I’ve also been looking at a few others too. (Brockport, Oswego, Oneonta, Plattsburgh). I’m also looking into a few other schools in the northeast as well like Pitt and UConn. Anyways, let me know what you think my chances are or if you have any suggestions. If you need anymore information let me know.
My current GPA is about roughly a 2.7. I did take the SAT’s and got a 1170 but I studied and plan to take them again tomorrow. I did take French for 3 years and I am taking 4 years of science and math as well.
This guide might help you. I wish you well but you might look at schools like Buff State (not UB), Fredonia, Oswego and Plattsburgh as back ups - and you listed a few too like Brockport and Oneonta but those I listed might be a bit easier. I didn’t look at the CDS to see acceptance rates by school.
If you strongly prefer Albany or Buffalo, and if the admissions decision doesn’t go your way, the community college transfer pathway is well worth considering as well. This would save you money and also give you smaller classes and more individual attention in the first two years. There are CC’s near the urban SUNYs - they don’t have their own housing, but there are student-oriented apartment complexes nearby, and this would allow you to get involved with the SUNY campus even before transferring, and take open-enrollment summer classes there too. Alternatively, quite a few of the more rural NYS CC’s have on-campus housing available. (Including Broome, which has a close relationship and a smooth transfer pathway with Binghamton, which is out of reach now but wouldn’t be as a transfer if you do well the first two years.)
But if you want a four-year school, that should be attainable; it just might not be one of those top two.
If you’re considering Oswego, check out their strong co-op program which might be a point in their favor.
