I know this might be considered a very dumb question but… For the suny supplemental essay, it lets you choose between four prompts, How would you academic interest add diversity to college… Choose an impact on your school… and If campus had one more seat left… why would it be you? Now I want to use a different topic preferably a topic that i did for my cuny which was If you could meet anyone in the world, from history or present day, who would it be and why? Now I was wondering if I chose to do topic of my choice and went with this prompt, If it would hurt my chances because maybe the colleges would like for me to choose any one of the prompts above and not go with a topic that is not presented. My question is what does the supplemental mean by topic of your choice? Are you allowed to use a prompt that is not listed under the given choices? and is it okay to use the prompt I suggested above? Thanks in advance!

If “Topic of your choice” was one of the prompts, then you do get to choose the topic. However, if your topic is clearly answering some other college’s prompt, thereby saving you the trouble of writing, do not use the CUNY one.

Since the other three prompts are specifically about YOU at SUNY, my guess is they want you to write about yourself and SUNY, rather than a random historical person. Now, if that historical person happens to be the founder of your major field of study and/or attended SUNY, it might work if you re-wrote it so that the old essay focused on the SUNY/educational aspects.

Go back to the reasons you chose SUNY as a place you want to attend. Read the materials about the acadmeics, special qualities and programs. Remind yourself. Then write a lovely essay about why you and SUNY go together.
