I’d be the first one to say I’m huge fan of Chicago.
I avidly read all the admissions material I got, from the postcards to the course catalog.

But does anybody else think that this new booklet for EA Admits ( I got in EA) is super-de-duper-dee boring/unreadable/ kinda lame?

I mean: “Ceremonial Words/Ritual Acts
A Retrospective of the First Five Hundred Convocations of the University of Chicago” sounds like it could be cool.

But it’s just a 100 pg time line…
(And it has only the speaker’s names and positions, and not their actual speeches).

Yeah. I flipped through it. Not much to read or, quite frankly, care about.

I was actually on campus for the 500th convocation. Even that didn’t seem like a really big deal. Maybe that’s because it was drizzling and pretty chilly. The bagpipes were kinda cool, though.

I was a part of the procession at 500th Convocation and I can tell you that attendance was tapered by the weather. The bagpipe procession would have gone from Hull Gate all the way to Rockefeller, but they had to reroute it from Ida Noyes, which is across the street.

I really enjoyed “Ceremonial Words/Ritual Acts,” but maybe that’s because I’ve been here long enough to know lots of U of C history.

Oh, is that the booklet you’re talking about? I haven’t received that yet . . . but today I did receive the 2008-2010 Courses and Programs of Study catalog I’ve had fun reading up on classes :)

Haha, yeah, those booklets are a little boring- but don’t worry, they’re “Official” University of Chicago history booklets left over from the 500th convocation, not something we send out yearly to try and entice you… history may not be for everyone, but they are, while dry, full of information. Look for more exciting things to come, promise :)

My daughter copy-edited the last two editions. As far as I know, the entire department where she worked was blown up, and its functions eliminated or assigned elsewhere.

We got 640+ page The College Courses & Programs of Study book in the mail yesterday. The information contained in the book is available online but …

The 2008-2010 edition will be totally out of date by the time you guys get to college. It’s really fun to look at, though! I don’t know when the 2010-?? edition will be posted online, but I’m sure they’ll let you know.
