Super shuttle shutting down

This makes me sad. Have used it for rides to ski resorts. Sad to end the year with this news for its employees https://www.cnn.com/2019/12/13/business/supershuttle-shutting-down/index.html

I’ve used it also at multiple airports. For me, it was way cheaper than Lyft or Uber.

We were just talking about SS on my last work trip in November. Used to be the standard way to get to the hotel from the airport on work trips. Worked well though was sometimes annoying how many hotel stops you had to make before getting to yours.

Haven’t used it in a while. Not surprised, but too bad. Thing of the past!

This is tough on many levels, and I’d say #1 are the employees, If it’s “true” that many drivers own their own vans, then I feel for them especially. Super Shuttle has been a mainstay for a dear friend who uses an electric wheelchair. SS has gotten him to/from airports and cruise ships many times, as other transportation companies do not have the lifts and ramps for wheelchair users. And Lyft/Uber have none.

My favorite SS story was about 12 years ago a dear friend and I went to NYC for a week. On our ride back to the airport our driver made the obligatory stop for another passenger. It was 6 am, and that passenger begged (through her building intercom) for the driver to “please wait 10 minutes” - I told the driver “my favorite bagel shop Murray’s is right around the block, I’ll treat coffee and bagels if you take us over”. He did. I did. The bagels were hot and delicious. And we went back and picked up the other passenger (no, she didn’t get bagels and coffee).

My last ride with Super Shuttle was horrible. I had to sit in the back. The woman in front of me said she was cold. I said 'without that air in my face, I will be car sick here in the back. That shut her up. I never liked having to go 20 or more miles out of my way when I was tired returning from a trip.

Too bad. Don’t have it in my current immediate area, but I relied on it most times I needed to get to LAX. My experience was they were always prompt and the drivers nice.

For some reason, I always worry that counting on Uber or Lyft to get to a plane could leave me in the lurch, if a car isn’t available locally, just when I need it.

My 27 y.o. kid used SS to get between campus and airport throughout his undergrad years. Reminds me of his school breaks.

My kids used shuttles to get to & from the airport. I’m not sure they were branded SuperShuttle, but they were helpful and pretty reliable. The cost was quite reasonable as well. It is sad, but I guess they couldn’t get the volume with Lyft and Uber. So far, I’ve never caught either Uber or Lyft to get TO the airport, but we have caught them to get places FROM the airport, where time is less important. I don’t have the Uber app and only catch Lyft (unless someone else summons the ride and is paying). I’m opposed to many things Uber has done in its business practices.
